Satellite views from yesterday evening continue to show a thermal anomaly. Seismicity at Shishaldin is unchanged over the last 24 hours. Complete report text
AVO raised the Aviation Color Code and Volcano Alert Level to YELLOW/ADVISORY this week based on a persistent thermal anomaly over the volcano's summit and an increase in seismicity over the last several months. Subsequently, pilots and residents of Cold Bay report a vigorous vapor plume issuing from the volcano. There have been no observations of ash and seismicity is largely unchanged this week.
Although detection of a thermal anomaly is rare at this volcano, it is not certain that this unrest will lead to an eruption. A thermal anomaly was observed in the months leading up to the last significant eruption at Shishaldin in 1999; this fact, combined with the likelihood that an eruption at Shishaldin could occur with little or no seismic precursors, drove AVO's decision to raise the Color Code and Alert Level.
A weak thermal anomaly persists in satellite views of Shishaldin Volcano. Seismicity remains unchanged. Yesterday, AVO received a pilot report and observations from Cold Bay describing a vigorous vapor plume from the summit. This activity is considered typical for Shishaldin. Complete report text
AVO continues to detect a thermal anomaly in satellite views of Shishaldin Volcano. Seismicity remains unchanged. Yesterday, AVO raised the Aviation Color Code to YELLOW and the Volcano Alert Level to ADVISORY. Complete report text
AVO has detected a significant thermal anomaly and a slight increase in earthquake activity at Shishaldin Volcano on Unimak Island in the eastern Aleutians. Together, these observations indicate a departure from background conditions at Shishaldin. AVO is raising the Aviation Color Code to YELLOW and the Volcano Alert Level to ADVISORY. There is no indication that an eruption is imminent or certain, although the potential for an eruption has increased. AVO will continue to monitor the volcano closely. Complete report text
