The ORNL Multicharged Ion Research Facility (MIRF)

The experimental atomic physics program in the ORNL Physics Division has as its overarching goal the understanding and control of interactions and states of atomic-scale matter. The scientific objective is improving understanding of the interactions of multicharged ions, charged and neutral molecules, and atoms with electrons, atoms, ions, surfaces, and solids. Our group's research underpins the basic plasma science needed for fusion energy, plasma processing of materials, atmospheric physics, and astrophysics.
