Old Heidelberg Hotel (1927)The Capital Gains and Losses project was developed by Melanie Hanley of Glasgow Middle School in Baton Rouge. The participating class was comprised of 7th grade gifted students enrolled in the Creative Thinking elective course. The students learned about urban development and urban planning before beginning the project. The project consisted of students learning about the historically significant structures in downtown Baton Rouge, and then creating a brochure for visitors to downtown. The brochure was designed for visitors walking through the downtown area. Students researched, visited, photographed and wrote about the different sites. Once sites were identified and documented, the information was placed onto a map of downtown Baton Rouge, complete with street names. Teacher Melanie Hanley served as mentor, guide and instructor throughout the project.

The students who participated in this project benefited greatly from their participation. The students gained knowledge in local history, technical publishing skills, critical thinking skills and knowledge of the urban environment. Pinboard Mockup of the Walking TourThe community benefited from this project through the eventual development of the Baton Rouge City of Landmarks Walking Tour Brochure through the Foundation for Historical Louisiana. The brochure was informed in part by the work and contribution of Ms. Hanley's class. The walking brochure is available to the public through the Foundation for Historical Louisiana.

Funding for this project was provided through a grant from the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT). Funds from NCPTT were used to purchase a digital camera, publishing software, projector, computer keyboard, computer mouse and miscellaneous supplies.
