Making commodity crops like bananas, coffee and cocoa sustainable into the future.

CABI aims to help smallholder farmers make a sustainable living from growing and selling their crops.

Researching emerging problems such as plant diseases or pests spotted for the first time in a new country

Resolving existing problems such as finding an environmentally friendly solution to help farmers adapt to new pesticide regulations that forbid use of chemical control

Improving crop quality by finding ways to help farmers adopt new techniques that add value to their produce

Advising policy makers on trade and quarantine issues

The impacts of our work to date include:

  • Building of expertise and capacity in commodity producing countries through innovative participatory techniques
  • New knowledge created on a range of pests and diseases
  • Improvement of on-farm practices through farmers understanding alternative ecological methods and better ways of using pesticides
  • Helping commodity producing regions to understand quarantine issues more fully and be able to respond to them
  • Improved quality and crop protection to provide  better returns to farmers and countries
  • Improved communication on commodity-related issues through our books, manuals, videos and GRO Cocoa newsletter.
