Microorganism supply

The unique properties and capabilities of microorganisms can be utilised for drug and active molecule discovery and as part of the research, testing and quality control programmes linked with production and manufacturing.

We supply authenticated reference, type and test strains to business. We maintain ISO846, BS2011Part II j and MIL810F test strains from the European, the UK and the American testing standards, and hold many other test and challenge strains. We hold production strains for enzymes, metabolites, active biomolecules and novel products.

Our range of organisms includes:

filamentous fungi and yeasts

plant pathogenic bacteria

nematodes

biocontrol agents belonging to these groups (e.g. biopesticides and entomopathogenic nematodes)

CABI holds over 28,000 living strains making our collection one of the most significant in the world. Our scientists travel the world through their research work and add to the collection strains from remote locations, making it very diverse and therefore particularly interesting for novel product discovery.

You can browse through our catalogue online. In addition to supplying active or freeze-dried cultures we can also supply DNA and culture extracts for ease of use or where containment facilities for the living culture are more demanding.

We will get a freeze-dried culture to you within three days from receipt of request and for an actively growing culture within one month from receipt. Due to the variable nature of some microorganisms, it may take longer to obtain an active culture; customers will be advised if this is the case.

Did you know?

Microorganisms can be used to improve degraded soil, break down unwanted waste or clean polluted water and land.

We hold the original Fleming Penicillium strain in our collection.

After sub-culturing a strain as little as twice, it can lose its original properties and is no longer valid for testing purposes.

Information about our culture collection

We have managed the UK National Collection of Fungus Cultures on site since 1947.

The collection is a member of the United Kingdom National Culture Collection (UKNCC), a UNESCO Microbial Resource Centre (MIRCEN) and an International Depository Authority (IDA) within the Budapest Treaty (1977).

Our culture collection operates:

to the World Federation for Culture Collection (WFCC) guidelines for culture collections

to the UKNCC Quality Management System

to the Common Access to Biotechnology Resources Information (CABRI) Guidelines

in the spirit of the Convention on Biological Diversity

Please note that CABI is not involved in keeping, selling or using dangerous animal and/or human pathogens. Our Genetic Resource Collection adheres to the quality system of the UK National Culture Collection and all UK and international legislation pertaining to the handling and transfer of organisms.
