Nuclear physics device for ORNL accelerator due in from England
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 19, 1994 — Although the Daresbury Nuclear Structure Facility in England was closed in 1993, one of its nuclear physics instruments will have a second life at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory.

Flanagan Earns Distinguished Career Award From Fusion Board

Lowndes, Stephenson and Vo-Dinh Named Corporate Fellows
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 9, 1994 — Martin Marietta Energy Systems has conferred one of its highest honors, the rank of corporate fellow, on Oak Ridge National Laboratory scientists Douglas H. Lowndes and Tuan Vo-Dinh and the Oak Ridge K-25 scientist Michael J. Stephenson.

ORNL Intel Computer Models Car Crashes
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Dec. 7, 1994 — Automobile manufacturers must crash models of their cars to determine if they meet safety standards for protecting passengers during accidents. Because a single car crash test can cost $50,000 to $750,000, an attractive alternative to crunching metal is crunching numbers.

PICS Team Helps Set World Record in Molecular Dynamics on ORNL's New Paragon(Tm) MP System
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 8, 1994 — A team of researchers from the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) and the State University of New York (SUNY) at Stony Brook have set a new world record for system size in molecular dynamics, using Intel's 1,024-node Paragon supercomputer.

Siegrist Named Chair of International Task Force
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 7, 1994 — Robert L. Siegrist, a researcher and engineer at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been named chair of the Task Force on Contaminated Sites under the International Committee of the Water Environment Federation. The task force, comprised of members from more than 15 nations around the world, is responsible for international information exchange and preparation of a monograph, describing international approaches for assessment, cleanup goal setting, and restoration/reuse of contaminated sites.

Award-Winning Student Joins Staff at Oak Ridge National Laboratory
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 7, 1994 — Anna Swan, a Wigner Fellow, has joined the research staff at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) in the Solid State Division's Particle-Surface Interactions Section. The Wigner fellowship, designed to provide research opportunities for exceptional young scientists, is named in honor of Nobel Laureate and former ORNL Research Director Eugene P. Wigner.

Korte Appointed to Ground Water Association
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 4, 1994 — Nic Korte of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been appointed to the editorial review board of the professional journal Ground Water Monitoring and Remediation. Korte heads ORNL's Environmental Sciences Division restoration and technology group, which is located in Grand Junction, Colo. In his capacity on the editorial review board, Korte will review and select manuscripts for publication.

ORNL Program Celebrates 25 Years of Science Education
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 3, 1994 — The Oak Ridge Science Semester Program is entering its 25th year at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The program involves undergraduate participants from colleges of the Great Lakes College Association (GLCA) and the Associated Colleges of the Midwest (ACM). Deans from the 12 GLCA colleges will be at ORNL Nov. 3 to get a first-hand look at the program, which has served as a model for the other DOE laboratories. They will also attend the annual poster session, highlighting the students' research projects.

Sparks Elected Fellow in American Physical Society
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Nov. 3, 1994 — Cullie J. Sparks Jr. of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been elected a fellow of the American Physical Society. Sparks, leader of the X-ray research and application group in ORNL's Metals and Ceramics Division, was cited by the society for his contributions to the development of X-ray optics and for his X-ray diffraction studies of atomic arrangements and displacements in crystals.

ORNL Researchers Detect Single Dye Molecule in Tiny Droplet
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 26, 1994 — Single molecules of a fluorescent dye in microscopic droplets of solution have been detected by researchers at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The laser-based detection technique allows counting of target molecules in very small volumes of liquid. The technique could be used to characterize gene-containing material that may be responsible for inherited diseases, or to track the flow of pollutants in rivers.

ORNL Researchers Receive ASHRAE Symposium Paper Award
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 18, 1994 — James R. Sand, Edward A. Vineyard and Van D. Baxter, researchers at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), received the 1993 ASHRAE Symposium Paper Award from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers Inc. (ASHRAE).

ORNL's Mural Selected to Participate In Antarctic Biology Training Course
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 14, 1994 — Jane G. Mural, a research assistant in the Environmental Sciences Division at the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL), has been selected to participate in the Antarctic Biology Training Course sponsored by the National Science Foundation (NSF).

O'Neill Receives Award from International Association for Ecology
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 14, 1994 — Robert V. O'Neill of the Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has received the Distinguished Statistical Ecologist Award from the International Association for Ecology (INTECOL).

Lu Receives Award from American Chemical Society
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 14, 1994 — Po-Yung Lu of the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) has been presented the Tillmanns-Skolnick Award by the Chemical Health and Safety Division of the American Chemical Society. Lu, who heads the biomedical and environmental information analysis section of the laboratory's Health Sciences Research Division (HSRD), was recognized his "outstanding, long-term service to the division." Lu has served as the division's program chair for the past four years.

ORNL and Scientific-Atlanta Conduct Research on Avoiding Vehicle Crashes
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Oct. 5, 1994 — The Department of Energy's (DOE) Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is collaborating with Scientific-Atlanta Inc. on research that could result in fewer deaths and injuries from vehicle collisions. The partnership will develop a means to study both driver and vehicle behavior, providing information that could aid in the design of crash-avoidance systems for cars and trucks.

President Clinton Announces Freeman Dyson and Liane Russell as Winners Enrico Fermi Award
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Sep. 20, 1994 — The President announced today that Freeman J. Dyson and Liane B. Russell are winners of the Enrico Fermi Award. The presidential award, carrying a $100,000 honorarium and a gold medal, is the government's oldest science and technology award. It is given for a lifetime of achievement in the field of nuclear energy.

Joe Culver Appointed Manager of Public Affairs, Oak Ridge National Laboratory
OAK RIDGE, Tenn., Jan. 4, 1994 — Joe W. Culver has been appointed manager of public affairs programs at the Department of Energy's Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). Most recently, Culver has been manager of public affairs for the Martin Marietta Energy Systems Office of Technology Transfer. He joined the Energy Systems public affairs organization in 1987.
