Public Health Activities

    ATSDR, a public health agency within the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, evaluates the human health effects of exposure to hazardous substances. Through the process of evaluating and identifying pathways of human exposure, ATSDR identifies the need for follow up activities including surveillance, registries, health studies, environmental health education, and applied substance-specific research. Through its programs and by working with other federal, state, and local government agencies, ATSDR acts to protect public health.

    ATSDR developed a report, called a public health consultation, which was used to help evaluate the possible public health impacts of arsenic at the East Omaha Arsenic Site. The consultation presents ATSDR’s findings and recommendations.
