Identifying Exposure Pathways

This online learning program explains how ATSDR identifies how people come into contact with hazardous substances (e.g., how they become exposed) through different environmental media.

It is hoped that this learn-by-doing simulation program will provide public health professionals and members of the public with an interesting and enjoyable way of learning more about ATSDR's public health assessment process, how they can participate in the process, and ultimately how they can work with ATSDR and state health assessors to better protect public health.

Comments received during pilot testing indicate the need to enhance the online training. In the future we hope to add an interactive scoping checklist to the course so that persons who complete it will learn the following:

  1. what steps to take when investigating a waste site or release,
  2. who needs to be contacted as part of the health assessment process,
  3. what information is needed before conducting a site visit,
  4. what information is needed to determine whether exposure had occurred or is occurring, and
  5. how the collected information should be used to identify possible “completed pathways of exposure.”

We welcome your comments and any feedback you might have on the program.

You may send your comments through the Comments link in the program or e-mail them to ephtraining@cdc.gov.
