Close to the California mainland, yet worlds apart, Channel Islands National Park encompasses five remarkable islands (Anacapa, Santa Cruz, Santa Rosa, San Miguel, and Santa Barbara) and their ocean environment, preserving and protecting a wealth of natural and cultural resources. Isolation over thousands of years has created unique animals, plants, and archeological resources found nowhere else on Earth and helped preserve a place where visitors can experience coastal southern California as it once was.

Channel Islands Live Eagle Webcam

In 2006, the first bald eagle chick to hatch unaided by humans on the Channel Islands in over 50 years made headlines across the country. Thrilled with the public interest in this historic event, federal agencies and the Ventura County Office of Education established a webcam that brought live, streaming images of the chick and its parents into the schools and homes of millions of Americans.

Due to the success of this webcam, it has been reestablished on Santa Cruz Island to watch this years nesting activity. The solar-powered camera runs daily between 8:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Visit Channel Islands Live to view the webcam. Viewers will need a computer with high bandwidth and Windows Media Player. Additional park webcam information and archival footage may be found at Webcams.

Video and still images of the May 19th attack on the nest by another bald eagle may be viewed on the Channel Islands Live Eagle CAM Discussion Forum.

For the latest news on the park's bald eagle program, please visit News Releases. Natural history information on bald eagles may be found at Bald Eagles.

The Channel Islands support the two primary breeding colonies of California Brown Pelicans on the west coast of the United States with rookeries on Anacapa and Santa Barbara Islands.
