RAMS PROGRAMThe Research Alliance in Math and Science (RAMS) Program is based on the belief that national laboratories and universities, working hand in hand, offer the best opportunity to make a positive impact on the quality of a diverse workforce. The Research Alliance in Math and Science program is designed to provide collaborative research experiences among faculty and students at colleges or universities and DOE national laboratory researchers. These experiences will improve the U.S. competitive research edge while encouraging and promoting Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) research throughout the academic year. Students majoring in computer science, the computational sciences (computational biology, computational chemistry, computational materials sciences, and so forth), engineering technologies, and mathematics are placed primarily in the Computing and Computational Sciences Directorate during the internship period. |
APPLYING TO THE PROGRAMApplications 2009 RAMS Program Schedule Generous stipends begin at $10.50/hour and are dependent on qualifications, education, experience, and expertise; weekly housing allowance is $110; inbound and outbound travel reimbursement allowance is $1000 maximum per term. |
PROGRAM DESCRIPTIONUndergraduate and graduate students intern at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) during a summer term of 10 - 12 weeks. Each student is assigned to a STEM research mentor to work on a project of interest to the student, the student's professor(s), and the ORNL researcher. Requirements of the program are to keep a daily journal of activities and experiences, attend weekly technical seminars, attend skills-enhancing workshops, write a summary paper describing the research project, give an oral presentation of research results, and present the project in poster sessions and symposia at ORNL and national conferences. The participant may arrange academic credit through his/her college or university. |

ATTENTION
The Oak Ridge National Laboratory is a secure campus. Access is controlled at the East and West entrances of Bethel Valley Road through a portal manned by security guards. Access is granted for badged personnel and subcontractors, and for visitors with pre-authorized notification.
Building access is controlled by a proximity card issued for specific buildings as appropriate.
Parking inside (meaning inside the fence, near buildings) is by permit only. Students and subcontractors are required to park in designated lots. ORNL shuttle service to/from parking lots is available.
