About Native Ranges

Because cultivars and manmade hybrids do not exist in nature with a native range all cultivars and hybrids* have a native range listed as "No" or "None." This does not mean, however, that the species from which the cultivar was selected may not have a native range. For example, Echinacea puruprea (purple coneflower) is listed as native to Missouri and has a native range but Echinaces purpurea 'Magnus' is not listed as native to Missouri or having a native range.

* A few interspecific hybrids occur naturally in nature, e.g., Asplenium x ebenoides (walking spleenwort fern), and therefore would be listed as native but any cultivars selected from this hybrid population would not.
