Baby Swings (Last Updated 07/09/2007)
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) staff is providing technical support for voluntary standard activities related to infant swings. An infant swing is a unit with a frame and a powered mechanism that enables an infant to swing, seated or reclined. CPSC staff worked with the ASTM F15.21 Infant Carriers, Bouncers and Baby Swings Subcommittee to develop a revised standard containing performance requirements for ASTM F 2088-03 Standard Consumer Safety Specification for Infant Swings.
In 2005, there were an estimated 1,800 portable infant swing-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency departments. CPSC also has reports of four swing-related infant deaths that occurred from 2001-2003.
CPSC staff is continuing to work with ASTM to address issues related to leg openings, stability and restraint systems.
