Wewoka Indian Health Center

Thirty-four miles north of Ada (only 75 miles from Oklahoma City) is the Wewoka Indian Health Center in Wewoka, Oklahoma. The community is small - less than 5,500; but offers good housing, shopping and public schools, with a junior college located only 15 miles away and three higher education colleges within 35 miles. Forty minutes away is the largest recreational lake in Oklahoma - Lake Eufaula - with its two modern resort lodges and many miles of lakefront vacation home sites. Wewoka truly represents "Middle America" and makes a fine environment for rearing families.

The Wewoka Indian Health Center employs three physicians, one physician assistant, and one family nurse practitioner who handle nearly 20,000 outpatient visits annually. Another 16,000 visits are managed by support staff. To a population of mostly Seminole Indians, the clinic renders outpatient services in general medicine, optometry, dentistry, counseling for emotional problems, and nutrition counseling.

The Pharmacy Department is staffed with 3 pharmacists and one pharmacy technician and offers an anticoagulation clinic. This referral based clinic manages all of the clinic's patients that require anticoagulation therapy and is nationally recognized.

The Community Health Department operates several clinics as well as numerous outreach programs with a focus on education. The Community Health Department consists of a public health educator and three public health nurses. The Community Health Department works closely with the medical staff to offer a team approach to disease prevention, management and treatment. One example is the diabetes program managed through the Diabetes Treatment and Education Center to treat patients upon referrals and self-referrals and is staffed with an RN case manager, a dietician, exercise physiologist and an outreach worker.

Hours of operation for the Wewoka Indian Health Center are 8:00 am to 4:30 pm, Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday. The health center is open from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm on Wednesday mornings and is closed Wednesday afternoons for administrative functions.

An extended-hours clinic is available the first Thursday of the month from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm for those patients that work during the day and for those patients that cannot come during regular clinic hours for other reasons. Sign-in is between 5:00 pm and 5:30 pm and is limited due to staffing available during this time.

The Health Center is located south of Wewoka, ΒΌ mile east of the junction of State Highways 270 and 56 and the phone number is (405) 257-6282.
