The National Council for Science and the Environment (NCSE) promotes science-based solutions to society’s major environmental challenges - climate change, energy, water, human health, and forest and wildlife conservation. NCSE has set a standard for communicating science to policymakers and the public, bringing together scientists, policymakers, corporate and civic leaders to develop solutions, promoting federal funding for environmental research and education, and advancing environmental programs across the nation’s campuses and high schools.

NCSE is recognized for its innovative programs and activities. Some highlights include:

  • Annual National Conference on Science, Policy and the Environment. Our most recent conference, Climate Change: Science and Solutions, attracted over 1,200 participants from government, universities, business and civic society. The upcoming conference, Biodiversity in a Rapidly Changing World, will be held on December 8-10, 2008 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center in Washington, DC.
  • Earth Portal, which is a comprehensive online resource for timely, objective, high quality information about the environment including climate change. It is the first free, authority-driven online resource on the environment. It contains The Encyclopedia of Earth, with over 2,800 articles produced and reviewed by over 800 scholars from 60 countries.
  • EnvironMentors, which is a national college access program for high school students from under-represented communities. EnvironMentors provides students with one-to-one mentoring relationships with professionals, faculty, and college students, and other opportunities, to prepare them for college degrees and careers in the environment and related fields.
  • National Commission on Science for Sustainable Forestry, which is a collaborative project between forest managers, practitioners and policymakers to develop science-based information and practical approaches for sustainable forest management.
  • Promoting federal funding for environmental research and education. NCSE has led a successful effort to restore full funding for the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s STAR Graduate Fellowship Program, helped to establish the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Coalition that supports increased federal investment in USGS programs, and promoted successful legistation to place the National Science Foundation on a path to double its funding in seven years.
