U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today announced that Jack Martin has been formally sworn in as chief financial officer for the U.S. Department of Education. In this role, he will serve as the principal adviser to the secretary on all matters related to discretionary grant making, cooperative agreements and procurement, as well as financial management, financial control, and accounting.

Prior to joining the Education Department, Martin served as managing director and chief executive officer for Jack Martin & Co., P.C., Certified Public Accountants since 1975. Between 1991 and 1994, Martin left the private sector to serve as chairman of the Provider Reimbursement Review Board at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

Martin received both his undergraduate and M.B.A. degrees from Wayne State University in Detroit.

The president formally nominated him Nov. 5, and he was confirmed by the Senate Jan. 25.

"I am pleased to have Jack Martin as a part of our team," Paige said. "Jack's experience and leadership will help us address long-standing management issues within the department and help us transform this agency into a model for other government organizations."
