Public Colleges / Universities:

History

The first land grant college in Indiana was built west of Lafayette, and opened its doors on September 16, 1874 as Purdue University. John Purdue pledged $150,000 of his own wealth to secure the site, and donated 100 acres of land to the school. Purdue was also responsible for encouraging prominent local citizens to pledge an additional $50,000. The university was named in Purdue’s honor, and is now the centerpiece for all of Tippecanoe County.
