MMS Approves Texas Coastal Impact Assistance Program Plan

Federal grants will help Texas restore and protect its shoreline environments

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Minerals Management Service Director Randall Luthi today signed the Texas Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) Plan, making available more than $48 million through Federal grants to the State and 18 counties to restore and protect their shoreline environments.  (01/12/2009)

MMS Extends the Comment Period for Virginia Offshore Oil and Gas Lease Sale 220 Call for Information and Notice of Intent

WASHINGTON – Minerals Management Service (MMS) is extending the public comment period for the Call for Information and Interest/Nominations and Notice of Intent (Call/NOI) to prepare an Environmental Impact Statement for initial information gathering for a proposed OCS Lease Sale 220 offshore Virginia.  (12/19/2008)

MMS Completes Assessment of Destroyed and Damaged Facilities from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike

Number of destroyed platforms exceeds number from Hurricane Katrina

NEW ORLEANS – Minerals Management Service (MMS) Gulf of Mexico Regional Office staff have completed the assessment of destroyed and damaged facilities from Hurricanes Gustav and Ike. The assessment was conducted in coordination with the oil and gas operators who report the status of their production platforms to MMS following a storm.  (11/26/2008)


MMS Underway with $3.7 Million Deepwater Coral Study

NEW ORLEANS - The Minerals Management Service (MMS) has begun a $3.7 million, four-year study of deepwater corals in the Gulf of Mexico. The study contract, which focuses on deepwater coral communities that have formed both naturally and on oil and gas platforms and shipwrecks, was awarded to TDI International Inc.  (11/24/2008)  


Interior’s Minerals Management Service Disburses Record $23.4 Billion in FY 2008

State share from energy production hits new high of $2.59 billion

WASHINGTON, D.C. – Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne today announced that Interior’s Minerals Management Service had distributed a record $23.4 billion to state, American Indian and federal accounts from onshore and offshore energy production during Fiscal Year 2008.  (11/20/2008)  


Minerals Management Service Approves $21 Million Grant for Louisiana Barrier Island Restoration

Louisiana Department of Natural Resources to receive Federal grant for East Grand Terre Island Restoration Project

NEW ORLEANS – The Minerals Management Service (MMS) has awarded a $21 million grant to the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources through the Coastal Impact Assistance Program (CIAP) to create beach, dune, and marsh habitats on the East Grand Terre Island using dredged material.  (11/19/2008)

MMS Report Details Excavation of Historic Shipwreck

Artifacts yield clues to colonial commerce in the Gulf of Mexico.

NEW ORLEANS — The archaeological excavation of a historic shipwreck, the deepest scientific recovery of artifacts ever attempted in the Gulf of Mexico, is the subject of a report published by the U.S. Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS), the federal agency that regulates the development of the nation’s offshore energy resources.  (10/29/2008)  


MMS Awards $5.5 Million to Study Gulf’s Loop Current

NEW ORLEANS — The Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) has awarded a $5.5 million contract to Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) to conduct a major study of the Gulf of Mexico Loop Current.  (10/08/2008)

NEW ORLEANS The U.S. Department of the Interior's Minerals Management Service (MMS) has completed an environmental review of seven proposed oil and gas lease sales in the Central Gulf of Mexico Planning Area (CPA) and the Western Gulf of Mexico Planning Area with the publication of a Supplemental Environmental Impact Statement (SEIS).  (10/07/2008)

NEW ORLEANS The Department of the Interior’s Minerals Management Service (MMS) has proposed that oil and gas Lease Sale 208 for the Central Gulf of Mexico Planning Area be held March 18, 2009.  The Notice of Availability of the Proposed Notice of Sale (PNOS) was published in the Federal Register on Friday, October 3.  (10/07/2008)

Sperm Whales Reside in Deepwater Gulf of Mexico

Western Gulf of Mexico Lease Sale 207 Attracts $487,297,676 in High Bids

New Orleans, LA – Secretary of the Interior Dirk Kempthorne announced that the Western Gulf of Mexico Oil and Gas Lease Sale 207, held today in New Orleans, attracted $487,297,676 in high bids.  (08/20/2008)

Latest Deepwater Gulf of Mexico Report Presents 2007 Industry Highlights

MMS Ocean Science Magazine Highlights Mission-Related Activities

In this issue of Ocean Science, MMS emphasizes the importance of its partnerships, through which multidisciplinary research projects, cooperative agreements, and joint projects with other agencies, governments, and industry are made possible. These collaborations result in invaluable studies.
