This is the Top of the Page Icon Temperature / Dewpoint

  1. The National Weather Service office in Negaunee township, MI recorded a low temperature of 9°F below zero on April 6, 2003. This is the coldest temperature ever recorded at this location during the month of April; records have been kept since 1961.

  2. A new all time monthly lowest temperature record was set in Jackson, MS on April 9, 2003. A high temperature of only 46°F was reached breaking the previous record of 47°F which was set on April 12, 1940.

  3. At Bismarck, ND a high temperature of 90°F was recorded on April 13, 2003. This is the earliest in the season temperatures have ever reached 90°F. Prior to this event, the earliest 90°F or above record high was 92°F which was set on April 18, 1987.

  4. At Juneau, AK a maximum temperature of 70°F was reached on April 24, 2003. This is the earliest record of 70°F to occur in Juneau, the previous record was set on April 27, 1995 at 70°F as well.

  5. Two locations in Alaska set new all-time high temperature records for the month of April on April 26, 2003, they are as follows:

    • Skagway recorded a high of 76°F breaking the previous record of 73°F set in 1983
    • Juneau recorded a high of 74°F

  6. At Denali National Park Headquarters, AK on April 27, 2003 a new record April maximum temperature set with at 67°F. The previous record was set on April 27, 1958 with a high temperature of 65°F.

  7. At Tok, AK a new all-time record was set for the month of April on April 27th, 2003. A high temperature of 73°F was recorded breaking the old record of 71°F which was set on April 30, 1989.

  1. At Jackson, MS a new all time monthly record was set on April 6, 2003. A total of 7.38 inches of rain fell, breaking the previous monthly record of 6.30 inches which was set on April 16, 1921.

  2. In Mississippi, the following two rivers set new flood stage records on April 8, 2003 when 5 -10 inches of rain fell throughout the area causing the rivers to surge to the following levels:

    • Chunky River near Chunky, MI reached 27.32 feet, breaking the previous record of 26.64 feet which was set on March 4, 1979
    • Chickasawhay River at Enterprise, MI reached 43.13 feet, breaking the previous record of 42.94 feet which was set on February 25, 1964

  3. At Portland, OR two new records were set for the most days in April to receive rainfall on April 30, 2003. At least 0.01 inches of precipitation has fallen on 24 separate days, breaking the old record of 23 days that was set in 1955. Also, at least 0.10 inches of precipitation has fallen on 18 separate days, breaking the old record of 17 days set in 1955.

  4. At Eureka, CA a new record was set for total rainfall for the month of April 2003. A total of 11.25 inches of rain fell during the month, breaking the previous record of 11.13 inches which was set in 1896.

  5. At Willow Creek, CA a new rainfall record was set for the month of April 2003. A total of 11.11 inches of rain fell breaking the previous record of 10.47 inches set in April of 1948. The normal rainfall total for April in Willow Creek is 3.16 inches.

  6. At Kahului airport, HI a new record was set for month of April 2003. Only 0.01 inches of rain fell during the entire month, breaking the previous record of 0.06 inches which occurred in April of 1990. The normal April rainfall total is 1.75 inches.

  1. At Kearney, NE a new all time record was set for the heaviest one day snow event to occur in April. A total of 9.4 inches of snow fell on April 6, 2003, breaking the previous record of 8.0 inches which was set on April 18, 1944.

  1. On April 27, 2003 Key West, FL reported the largest hail ever recorded. Between 4:10-4:20pm, hailstones ranging in size from one-half inch up to one and three-quarter inches fell, breaking the previous record of one-half inch which was set on May 10, 1961. This was the 11th time since 1871 that hail has fallen in Key West.
