Rainfall

1. At the Duluth, MN airport 8.18 inches of rain has fallen in April 2001. This is a new all time monthly record for April. The old record was 5.85 inches set back in 1894.

2. At Sioux Falls, SD 6.97 inches of rain has fallen in April 2001. This is a new all time monthly record for April. The old record was 2.64 inches.

3. At the Rochester, MN Intl airport 7.30 inches of rain has fallen in April 2001. This is over two and a half times the normal April precipitation total of 2.73 inches. In addition, this is a new monthly all time monthly record for April. The old record was 6.47 inches set in 1990 and 1999. Another interesting fact is that Rochester has had three months in the last year which have been either the wettest for that month or in the top 5 wettest for that particular month. May 2000 (7.37 inches) was the third wettest May and June 2000 (12.52 inches) was the wettest June.

4. At Minneapolis/St Paul, MN AP 7.00 inches of rain has fallen in April 2001. This is a new monthly record, the previous April record was 5.89 inches in 1986. This was also the wettest April when pioneer records are considered as well.

5. At St. Cloud, MN AP 8.42 inches of rain has fallen in April 2001. This is a new monthly record, the previous April record was 6.31 inches set in 1896.

Snowfall

1. Aberdeen, SD sets record at 144 days with consecutive snow cover. The snow depth as of 6AM on April 1st, 2001 was less than 1 inch. This ended the 144th consecutive day streak with 1 inch or more of snow on the ground. This is the longest stretch of snow cover since 1950 when daily snow depth became available. During the winter of 1936-1937, 110.8 inches of snow fell and that winter likely had snow on the ground for a longer period. The old record for consecutive days was the winter of 1996 - 1997 with 139 days.

Pressure

1. A strong area of low pressure passed over Sioux Falls, SD on April 10th, 2001. The pressure at the airport dropped to 28.84 inches at 634 AM. This is a new record low pressure for the month of April. The previous April record was 28.91 inches set on April 12th, 1982. The annual low pressure record is 28.62 inches recorded on March 3rtd, 1950. Pressure records date back to 1949.

Miscellaneous

1. The temperature at the Charlotte Douglas International Airport on April 19th, 2001 reached 30 degrees F. This tied the minimum temperature for the date set back in 1983. Records for the station go back to 1978. More importantly, the first freeze of the season was back on October 9th, 2001 which was the earliest ever and 193 days have elapsed since that record. This 193 day period is the longest freeze season in Charlotte. The old record was 189 days from October 26th, 1962 to May 2nd, 1963. Also April 19th was the fourth latest date that freezing temperatures have been reported in the spring. The latest spring freeze occurred on May 2nd, 1963.
