 Temperature / Dewpoint
1. The maximum temperature of 66 degrees on July 13th at Raleigh-Durham, NC set a July record for the coldest maximum temperature on record. The previous record, 67 degrees, was set the previous day. Observations date back to 1887.
2. Houston, TX reached the 95 degree mark on July 22, the latest date for this threshold. The old record was July 18, 1961.
3. Dallas-Ft Worth, TX reached triple digits (101 degrees) for the first time in 1999 on July 23rd. Just last year Dallas experienced a near-record (56) days with temperatures reaching 100 degrees.
4. A midsummer chill in southern California led to record low temperatures for late July with Thousand Oaks, CA in coastal Ventura County recording a low of 46 degrees on the 24th, which is the coolest temperature ever recorded in that city in the month of July.
5. Billings, MT recorded 105 degrees on July 24th setting a record for the date and coming within one degree of the all-time station record of 106 degrees set on July 4, 1937 and again on July 10, 1939.
6. For 11 consecutive days from the 7th through the 17th, the maximum temperature at Las Vegas, NV remained below 100 degrees. This string set a new record, with the old record of 8 consecutive days occurring in 1982.
7. Las Vegas, NV set a record for the fewest number of days in July with temperatures equal to or exceeding 100 degrees. For July 1999, there have been only 15 days meeting the threshold. The previous record of 18 days occurred in July 1984.
8. Tucson, AZ set a July record for consecutive days below 100 degrees on July 29 with 23 consecutive days as of that date. The old record was 22 consecutive days set in 1965 and 1976. The existing record for most consecutive days during the summer (June-August) period is 44 days which occurred in 1955.
9. With a reading of 104 degrees on July 31, Raleigh-Durham, NC tied a record for the greatest number of days in a calendar year with a temperature equal to or exceeding 100 degrees. (Note: this site also recorded 104 degrees on August 1, thereby setting a new station record (9 days) for number of days meeting/exceeding the 100 degree threshold. The old record was 8 days set back in 1953.)
10. The 100 degree reading at Port Columbus, OH on July 31 established a new daily record and it was the first 100 degree reading at the airport location since July 15, 1988
11. The 104 degree reading at Greenville-Spartanburg, SC on July 31 tied the all-time maximum temperature record. Observations began in 1918.
12. Beaufort, SC experienced a new record high minimum temperature for July 31, with an overnight temperature of 88 degrees.
13. July 1999 tied a mean temperature record at Port Columbus, OH with an average of 80.2 degrees. Not only does this tie the July record established in 1934, but it also ties for the warmest month on record.
14. Atlantic City, NJ experienced its warmest July on record with a mean monthly temperature of 78.4 degrees breaking the old record of 78.1 degrees set in 1993.
15. July 1999 was the warmest July on record at New York City�s Central Park reporting location, with a mean temperature of 81.4 degrees. The previous record, set in 1955, was 80.9 degrees.
16. During the morning of July 30th...a record dew point temperature of 81 degrees F. was observed at the Minneapolis St. Paul International Airport. Consultation with the Minnesota State Climatologist has confirmed that this value of 81 degrees F eclipsed the previous record of 80 degrees recorded as recently as Thursday July 22nd, 1999.
Rainfall
1. Rainfall of at least 1.77" on July 28th at Waterloo, IA raised their monthly total to 12.78", breaking the previous July record of 12.60" set in 1968.
2. Nome, AK experienced its third wettest July on record with 4.92" of precipitation. The 2 wetter Julys were 1920 with 8.43" and 1922 with 6.20".
3. The 3.48" of precipitation recorded at Pittsburgh, PA on July 28th was a new July 24 hour record for the location, surpassing the old record of 3.20" which fell on July 26, 1921. The report was also the 3rd greatest 24 hour total, exceeded only by 3.57" on August 21, 1888 and 3.56" on October 15, 1954. Precipitation records began in the Pittsburgh area in 1872.
4. July 1999 was the driest July on record at Allentown, PA with the 0.33" rainfall total breaking the previous record low total of 0.42". Records for Allentown began in 1912.
5. New York City�s Central Park location reported its driest July with only 0.44" of rainfall occurring, breaking the old record of 0.49" set in 1910.
6. Hilo, HI experienced its driest July on record with 3.53" of rainfall, breaking the old record of 3.83" set in 1975.
