NIAID AIDS Vaccine Research Subcommittee
Meeting Postponed
The AIDS Vaccine Research Subcommittee (AVRS), a component of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) AIDS Research Advisory Committee, will not meet as scheduled on March 3, 2008, in Bethesda, Md. Instead, the subcommittee meeting has been postponed until after NIAID holds a scientific summit on March 25 to gather input on the scope and balance of its HIV vaccine research activities. Information regarding the summit, which will be webcast, will be posted to the NIAID Web site in coming weeks.
Postponing the AVRS meeting will enable the subcommittee members to incorporate the perspectives voiced at the summit with other data in their further consideration of the proposed large-scale, international HIV vaccine study known as PAVE 100. The additional time also will enable the PAVE 100 protocol team to more fully evaluate data from the STEP study, including new data presented on February 5 at the Conference on Retroviruses and Opportunistic Infections in Boston.
The AVRS meeting will be rescheduled for this spring, and details about the meeting will be published in the Federal Register.
NIAID is a component of the National Institutes of Health. NIAID supports basic and applied research to prevent, diagnose and treat infectious diseases such as HIV/AIDS and other sexually transmitted infections, influenza, tuberculosis, malaria and illness from potential agents of bioterrorism. NIAID also supports research on basic immunology, transplantation and immune-related disorders, including autoimmune diseases, asthma and allergies.
