Current Research on Noise and Hearing LossHealth Hazard EvaluationsThrough the Health Hazard Evaluation (HHE) program, NIOSH staff evaluate noise exposures in many workplaces. From 1986-1997, NIOSH conducted 27 HHEs that addressed noise as a hazard in industries such as agriculture, construction, manufacturing, transportation and service. During these evaluations NIOSH may monitor noise exposures, survey worker medical information, conduct worker audiometric evaluations, assess worker use of hearing loss protection devices and evaluate hearing loss prevention policies and standards. The results of the evaluations help companies assess workers exposure to noise, evaluate and plan noise controls and develop employee education programs on hearing loss prevention. For a summary of the noise HHEs call 1-800-CDC-INFO and request NIOSH publication 99-106.
