NRC ISSUES CITIZENS’ REPORT SUMMARIZING FY 2008 |
|||||||||
The Nuclear Regulatory Commission issued its FY 2008 Citizens’ Report that provides a summary of the agency’s fiscal year (FY) 2008 Performance and Accountability Report, which was released in November 2008. The Citizens’ Report highlights the agency’s achievements in promoting nuclear safety and security while adhering to the principles of regulatory independence, transparency, and reliability. In FY 2008, under the NRC’s watch, 104 nuclear power plants operated safely and the public remained protected from unnecessary radiation in the use of nuclear materials in medicine, research and industry. To date, the agency is reviewing 17 Combined License applications to build and operate 26 new nuclear power plants. These proposed nuclear power plants, if approved and constructed, would be the first new plants built in more than 30 years. In addition, the NRC began a full technical review of the U.S. Department of Energy’s application to build and operate the nation’s first geologic repository for high-level nuclear waste at Yucca Mountain in Nevada. A message from the NRC Chairman, the Citizens’ Report and the Performance and Accountability Report are available on the lower left-hand corner of the NRC’s Web site at: www.nrc.gov. |
