ABSTRACT: The forage industry plays a major role in Ohio agriculture and land use. Of the total Ohio farm area, 27% is in some type of forage or grassland (not including turf or roadsides). Approximately 1.6 million animals in Ohio are fed forage during some portion of their life cycle. Cattle and calves occur on 37% and horses on 26% of Ohio farms. Ohio ranks 11th in milk production, 18th in dry hay production, and 26th in beef production all of which are dependent on some form of efficient utilization of forage crops. The Ohio State University Forage Program supports the Ohio forage industry through research, teaching, and outreach education. Our team is multi-disciplinary and is involves multi-institutional, multi-state, and international collaborations. We are taking steps to adapt to changing conditions and seeking new and sometimes non-traditional opportunities in research, teaching, and outreach education. This seminar will provide an overview of the OSU Forage Program and how we are seeking to help Ohio become greener in more ways than one.

All educational programs conducted by The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences are available to clientele on a nondiscriminatory basis without regard to race, color, creed, religion, sexual orientation, national origin, gender, age, disability or Vietnam-era veteran status.
