Posted 8 January 2008. Cooperative Institute: Earth System Modeling for Climate Applications. Published in the Federal Register on 24 October 2007 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The OAR invites applications for the establishment of a Cooperative Institute (CI) with expertise in Earth System Modeling focused on analysis of and applications on climate timescales that are decadal or longer. This CI will facilitate a long-term collaborative environment between NOAA and the recipient(s) comprised of broad-based research, modeling, analysis and applications that focus on the linkages of the Earth system with a focus on climate change. Proposals due 24 December 2007.

Posted 8 January 2008. Cooperative Institute: Alaska and Related Arctic Research. Published in the Federal Register on 24 October 2007 by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA). The Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR) invites applications for the establishment of a cooperative institute (CI) to conduct ecosystem and environmental research related to Alaska and its associated Arctic regions, including the Gulf of Alaska, Bering Sea, Chukchi/Beaufort Seas, and Arctic Ocean. This CI will facilitate a long-term collaborative environment between NOAA and the recipient(s) within which broad-based research, prototype development, and education and outreach capabilities that focus on the NOAA’s priorities in the Alaska and associated Arctic regions can be developed and sustained. Proposals due 24 December 2007.

Posted 8 January 2008. Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research Implementation Awards. The U.S. Department of Energy's Experimental Program to Stimulate Competitive Research (DOE EPSCoR) is interested in receiving grant applications for its Implementation Awards program from states and territories eligible for the program. The program is a federal-state partnership program supporting basic and applied research and development across a wide range of interdisciplinary Department Program Offices (including Biological and Environmental Research, which has climate change research as a subcategory). Applications are sought for improvement of the state's academic research infrastructure in key science and technology energy-related areas identified by the state's EPSCoR governing committee. Awards under this program are meant to support a group of scientists and researchers working on a common scientific theme across the state, and are not appropriate mechanisms to provide support for individual faculty science and technology research projects. Eligible states include Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Hawaii, Kansas, Mississippi, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Tennessee, Vermont, Wyoming, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and U.S. Virgin Islands. Applications are due by 25 January 2008.

Posted 8 January 2008. Paleo Perspectives on Climate Change (P2C2). The goal of research funded under the National Science Foundation’s interdisciplinary P2C2 solicitation is to utilize key geological, chemical, and biological records of climate system variability to provide insights into the mechanisms and rate of change that characterized Earth's past climate variability, the sensitivity of Earth's climate system to changes in forcing, and the response of key components of the Earth system to these changes. Important scientific objectives of P2C2 are to provide comprehensive paleoclimate data sets that can serve as model test data sets analogous to instrumental observations and to enable transformative syntheses of paleoclimate data and modeling outcomes to understand the response of the longer-term and higher magnitude variability of the climate system that is observed in the geological record. Proposals due 4 February 2008, 15 October 2008, and 15 October 2009.

Posted 8 January 2008. Research Opportunities in Space and Earth Sciences. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is soliciting basic and applied research in support of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD). This covers all aspects of basic and applied supporting research and technology in space and Earth sciences, including Earth surface observations and field campaigns that support SMD science missions; development of integrated Earth system models; development of systems for applying Earth science research data to societal needs; and development of applied information systems applicable to SMD objectives and data. Applications are due by 30 April 2008 with some research areas due sooner.

Posted 8 January 2008. Coupling, Energetics, and Dynamics of Atmospheric Regions (CEDAR). The goal of the National Science Foundation’s CEDAR program is to understand the behavior of atmospheric regions from the middle atmosphere upward through the thermosphere and ionosphere into the exosphere in terms of coupling, energetics, chemistry, and dynamics on regional and global scales. These processes are related to the sources of perturbations that propagate upward from the lower atmosphere as well as to solar radiation and particle inputs from above. The activities within this program combine observations, theory and modeling. Proposals are due 10 May each year.

Posted 8 January 2008. Office of Science Financial Assistance Program. The Office of Science of the Department of Energy (DOE) has a continuing interest in receiving grant applications for support of work program areas including Biological and Environmental Research, which has climate change research as a subcategory. The original solicitation was published by DOE on 3 September 1992 in the Federal Register (10 CFR Part 605, Final Rule). The climate change research program’s emphasis is on: (1) understanding and simulating the radiation balance from the surface of the Earth to the top of the atmosphere (including the effect of clouds, water vapor, trace gases, and aerosols); (2) enhancing and evaluating the quantitative models necessary to predict natural climatic variability and possible human-caused climate change at global and regional scales; (3) understanding and simulating both the net exchange of carbon dioxide between the atmosphere, terrestrial systems, and the effects of climate change on the global carbon cycle; (4) understanding ecological effects of climate change; (5) improving approaches to integrated assessments of effects of, and options to mitigate, climatic change; and (6) basic research directed at understanding options for sequestering excess atmospheric carbon dioxide in terrestrial ecosystems and the ocean, including potential environmental implications of such sequestration. Applications for the current funding round are due by 30 September 2008.

Posted 8 October 2004.  Modeling, Analysis and Prediction; Climate Variability and Change. NASA Research Announcement (NRA) NNH04ZYS008N. This NRA invites proposals that include research and applications development in four areas: (1) the Global Modeling and Assimilation Office (GMAO); (2) the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies (GISS) research supporting modeling and analysis; (3) a new Cloud Modeling and Analysis Initiative (CMAI) to utilize surface, in situ and satellite remote sensing data toward improvement of cloud model representation in climate and weather models; and (4)  the NASA Global Modeling Initiative (GMI).  Issued 16 August 2004. Proposal due date is 16 November 2004.

Posted 8 October 2004.   Earth Sciences Research at the National Science Foundation [NSF].  Program solicitation from the NSF, Directorate for Geosciences,  Division of Earth Sciences.   "The Division of Earth Sciences (EAR) supports research and education focused on understanding Earth dynamics. Deciphering the complex record of the planet's past or investigating the forces actively changing it today, EAR's research portfolio centers on the Earth's interior and terrestrial surface, including freshwater systems and interactions with the biosphere and atmosphere. Support is available for field, laboratory, and theoretical studies in any discipline of earth science including geology, geobiology, geophysics, geochemistry, geodesy, geolimnology, geomorphology, economic geology, environmental science, hydrology, paleontology, petrology, sedimentology, seismology, stratigraphy, structural geology, tectonics, and volcanology. Given the complexity of Earth systems, multidisciplinary research is strongly encouraged and supported."

Posted 15 April 2003.  Interdisciplinary Science in the NASA Earth Science Enterprise. NASA Research Announcement NRA-03-OES-03. "The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) announces the solicitation of proposals for researchers to participate in NASA Earth Science Enterprise (ESE) Earth Observing System (EOS) interdisciplinary research and analysis activities. Proposals should contain cross-cutting, interdisciplinary research spanning and integrating across discipline areas addressed by the Enterprise." Among the questions the ESE Research Strategy seeks answers to: "How well can cycling of carbon through the Earth system be modeled, and how reliable are predictions of future atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and methane by these models?" Proposals due 1 May 2003.

Posted 22 Feb 2001. Scientific Discovery Through Advanced Computing (SciDAC): Climate Change Prediction Program Notice 01-09 --Published January 2, 2001.  Preapplications are encouraged. There is no deadline for the submission of preapplications, but early submission is strongly encouraged to allow time for meaningful discussions.  Formal applications must be received no later than March 15, 2001.

Posted 9 Feb 2001.  Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences.  Second call for research proposals.  "The purpose of this second announcement is to solicit proposals from individuals or small teams of researchers for research projects up to $200,000/year, from Canadian university researchers.  Letters of Intent for large proposals and network applications in excess of $200,000/year will await the next (third) call for proposals, likely in April 2001.  Research projects, due to CFCAS by April 30, 2001, will be considered by the Grants Review Committee, and subsequently by the Board of Trustees by September 2001, with the view of having awards announced and projects initiated by October 1, 2001.  Details available online.

NASA Earth System Science Fellowship Program (Formerly the Global Change Research Fellowship Program and the Earth Science Graduate Student Research Program).  fellowships for persons pursuing Master of Science (M.Sc.) or Doctoral (Ph.D.) degrees in Earth System Science. For the 2001/2002 academic years, NASA will award up to 50 new fellowships.  Proposals due 15 March 2001.

Posted 8 Jan 2001: Department of Energy, Atmospheric Radiation Measurement (ARM) Program: Call for Proposals Set for February 2001.  In a posting dated 3 January 2001, the ARM program says a call for proposals is in process and should be published sometime in February 2001. Brief pre-applications from those interested in proposing will be requested in the next several months, and the complete proposals will probably be due around mid-May 2001. At this point, more specific information is not available. The call will be posted (see the ARM "What's New" page) when it is actually published.  The  ARM program is the largest global change research program supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). ARM scientists focus on obtaining field measurements and developing models to better understand the processes that control solar and thermal infrared radiative transfer in the atmosphere (especially in clouds) and at the earth's surface. 

Posted 8 Jan 2001: National Oceanographic Partnership Program (NOPP).  FY 2001 Broad Agency Announcement.  Posted by the Consortium for Oceanographic Research & Education (CORE) on 20 Dec 2000.  Proposals due 1 May 2001.  NOPP "has as its central focus an integrated and sustained ocean observation system which will be achieved by a federation of many elements that can support a wide range of users."
