Vancomycin-Resistant Enterococci (VRE)
Enterococci are bacteria that are commonly found in the human digestive tract and female genital tract, but do not pose a threat to healthy people. Infections occur more commonly in people that are in hospital or healthcare facilities and may be more susceptible to infection. The antibiotic vancomycin is commonly used to treat infections, but upon exposure, some bacteria will develop or acquire resistance to vancomycin.
