AWWA Competitions

If you have never participated in any of these competitions, you don’t know what you’re missing!  Not only are they exciting opportunities to showcase tap water quality and operator ingenuity, know-how and skills, but they demonstrate the effectiveness and professionalism among those in the water supply sector.

Pipe Tapping Contest
TappingThumbnailWith intramurals beginning at the AWWA Section level, water utility teams race to open a cement-lined, ductile iron pipe and
install a tap. The national competition is held at the AWWA Annual Conference every June. Watch videos of recent winners!




Top Ops

TopOpsthumbnailThe "college bowl" of the water industry, TopOps tests the everyday know-how of water treatment operators, with questions approved by the Association of Boards of Certification (ABC). ABC is dedicated to protecting public health and the environment by advancing the quality and integrity of environmental certification programs through innovative technical support services, effective information exchange, professional and cost-effective examination services, and other progressive services for certifying members.

The national competition is held at the AWWA Annual Conference every June.The AWWA Pipe Tapping and Top Ops Contests are overseen by the Distribution & Plant Operations Division and Operator Involvement Committee.

Meter Madness
MMThumbnailThis fast-paced contest pits competitors against the clock to assemble a water meter from a bucket of parts. The contest is sometimes held at Section conferences. The national-level Meter Madness contest is conducted during the AWWA Annual Conference.



"Best of the Best" Water Taste Test
TasteTestThumbEach year at the AWWA Annual Conference, winners of AWWA Section taste test compete for the title of "Best of the Best." Learn how to help your Section start a taste test! 




Gimmicks & Gadgets
GadgetsthumbIf that whatchamacalit you invented is saving your utility time and money,  it could earn you a little pocket change. First place earns $500; second place nets $300; and third place takes $200. Winners are featured in the September issue of Opflow and are honored at AWWA's annual Distribution System Symposium each September.
