Event Details:

Theme: Food Labels: Organic & Beyond

The organic industry began to solidify around California organic agriculture policies in the mid-1970s, with the first California legislation regarding organic production practices becoming law in 1976. California led the nation in developing a system of statewide laws and regulations, which were followed by the establishment of the National Organic Program in 2002. Organic agriculture is the only agricultural certification system that is based on Federal law.

The use of branded agricultural productions practices that certify to particular standards, such as sustainable, fish- or eco- or river-friendly, local, biointensive or fair trade, have existed for years. Do these labels add to the value of organic? Or do they chip away at organic’s market share? Do they confuse the consumer? Or do they assure the consumer that what s/he is buying is truly what it says it is? As new efforts to develop other labeling certifications emerge in national, state and local community levels, it is becoming more and more important to discuss the potential benefits as well as possible drawbacks of these standards.

At this year’s annual meeting, a panel of experts will share their experiences and perspectives regarding food labeling and organics. Please join them and us for two hours of spirited debate and discussion, followed by a reception of organic food and beverages!
