U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige today released the following statement on President Bush's plan to create a new Department of Homeland Security:
"President Bush and I are committed to ensuring our children and their teachers are safe in school. Since Sept. 11, we've worked with our state and local education leaders to equip them with the information and resources they need to help plan for and respond to often unthinkable acts of violence and terror. Our efforts will continue."
"Today, I'm proud to applaud the president for his bold action today to transform the patchwork of our government's safety and security activities into a single department whose primary mission is to protect every American. I look forward to our continued work with the President and my new colleague on the cabinet to keep our nation and our citizens safe and secure."
