U.S. Secretary Rod Paige today issued the following statement regarding the 30th anniversary of Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex in programs and activities receiving federal financial assistance.

"Title IX has opened many doors of opportunity to generations of women and girls to achieve, to compete, and to pursue their American dream.

"Many have walked through those doors. Today, more women than ever are playing sports, getting college degrees and entering the professions. In fact, the majority of college students are women, and more than 40 percent of law, medical and doctoral degrees are awarded to women.

"On this important day, President Bush and I join in celebrating the success and the spirit of Title IX that says, 'Open to all.'

"We are committed to ensuring that Title IX continues to be a vital vehicle for enhancing opportunities for boys and girls, and women and men, both in the classroom and on the playing field."
