New Mexico NRCS Engineering Resources

Spotlights

Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act project

Sixty percent of the area classified as floodplain along the arroyo that parallels Morgan Street in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico was removed from its floodplain classification because of the Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act project there. For more information on this program contact the NRCS New Mexico at (505)761-4489.

Rehabilitation of dam

The Piedra Liza Dam, located above the town of Bernalillo, is slated for rehabilitation. It was built to protect agricultural lands, irrigation facilities, and urban structures after a devastating flood in 1949 destroyed a 100-year-old convent in Bernalillo. The project sponsors are the Coronado SWCD, Town of Bernalillo, and Sandoval County. NRCS is providing 65 percent of the funding. Project sponsors of existing dams built with NRCS assistance are encouraged to contact the NRCS state conservation engineer for a rehabilitation assessment at (505)761-4489.

Assisting the state's dairy industry

NRCS New Mexico is active in assisting the state’s dairy industry by designing waste facilities to assure New Mexicans of continuing clean water supplies. In FY2006 NRCS New Mexico, through its Environmental Quality Incentives Program (EQIP), committed $1.05 million to the design and construction of waste water facilities in animal feeding operations.
