A MINUTE OF HEALTH WITH CDC
Nobody Wants Chicken Pox!
Prevention of Varicella: Recommendations of the Advisory Committee on
Immunization Practices (ACIP)
June 29, 2007

This program is presented by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. CDC – safer,
healthier people.

Varicella is the scientific name for chickenpox, a common childhood disease. There are
some very good reasons to avoid chickenpox and now there are vaccines to prevent it.
Chickenpox can be a serious illness, especially for older people, woman who are
pregnant, and others. An independent group of medical experts that advises CDC on
immunization practices has issued new vaccine recommendations for preventing
chickenpox: who should get vaccinated, when, and why. To learn more, call 1-800-
CDC-INFO or go to CDC’s immunization web site, cdc.gov/vaccines.
