Whether you're keeping up appearances or just want a little pampering without too much guilt, Karri Patton is ready to help. Patton, founder and sole operator of Studio Karri L, a boutique nail spa located in the heart of Madison Park, recently lowered prices on her popular ("Evening Magazine" 2008
Best of Western Washington) manicure and pedicure treatments. Now, a
60-minute pedicure is $40 (previously $60), and a 30-minute manicure
costs $20 (previously $40).

When men's boutique Blackbird
arrived in Seattle in 2004, it made news because it was one of the
first contemporary retail stores in the city devoted to fashion-forward
styles for men. Now the groundbreaking boutique, which originally
opened in Fremont but later moved to Ballard, is making news again,
with its own line of apparel and accessories. The collection's inaugural products are a pair of slim, black jeans
with a historic moniker and an urbane leather journal that begs to
travel.

Walking into Jodell Egbert's month-old shop Bella Umbrella is a little bit like stepping over the threshold of your favorite great aunt's house where everything feels precious, dainty and beautiful. The umbrellas that hang from the ceiling give the space a cozy feel, and the vibrantly colored fabrics they're made from add a dreamy quality to the ambiance.

The country of Georgia has been cultivating wine grapes
since 7000 B.C., making it the oldest wine-producing area known. Until recently, it was difficult to find these wonderfully dry and rustic old-world style European wines in the U.S. Now, Seattle buyers can find these spectacularly valued wines in such local stores as Whole Foods, Esquin Wine Merchants, University Village QFC and West Seattle Cellars; and by the glass at Union and Purple Café and Wine Bar.

Krissy Maier, owner of Seattle-based Orange Box Jewelry,
carries her favorite heirloom with her every day: her grandmother's
gold mesh wallet. Maier says that "every time I use the wallet someone
mentions it and I get to tell people about my grandmother. I want that
for other people." To that end, she has made a business of creating
remastered vintage jewelry, each piece with its own story to tell.

I've been intrigued by the feather headband trend since it first hit
over the summer. Perhaps you've noticed them? A curved flat spray of
beautiful natural feathers fashioned onto a thin fabric-covered
headband adds just the right touch of understated glam to any outfit. I recently set out to discover more about this exotic feathery trend.

Local designer and former Seattle Times news artist
Boo Davis owns Quiltsrÿche, an "evil quilt empire," a place
where "evil and cute intersect." Davis has ingeniously found a way to combine her love of heavy metal
music with the somewhat staid domestic art of quilting. She blends
popular metal icons like the sign of the horns and song titles like
"God Bless the Children of the Beast" with classic quilting techniques.
The results are cheeky, rebellious and sometimes irreverent works of
functional art.
