Our mission is to be a catalyst for Santa Cruz' relocalization—the development of local self-reliance in food, energy, transportation, media, systems of care, economy and the arts—through a broadly inclusive community-building process. Read more...

Good Food, the movie

Good Food movieThursday, January 15, 7pm
1st Congregational Church, 900 High St.
Free/by donation

In Santa Cruz we are blessed with an ample supply of organic food. But how much of our food is truly local? We are giving the Santa Cruz premier of a wonderful new movie, "Good Food," which looks at the inspiring example of the local food movement in the Pacific Northwest, to kick off our January series of events on local food. Local farmer Darryl Wong will be on hand to draw the connections to the situation in our area, with plenty of time for Q and A.

This event is co-sponsored by 1st Congregational Church and CCOF.

The Future of Local Food, January 30-31

Both at United Methodist Church, 250 California St., Santa Cruz (near Bay)

How will Santa Cruzans feed ourselves in 2020? What will be our creative solutions to the challenges of expensive energy and a warmer, drier climate? Taking a close look at our local food supply and its future is the theme of a pair of upcoming events we are organizing at the end of January. In an evening panel event and a follow-up community day of conversation and brainstorming, Santa Cruzans will have the opportunity both to hear perspectives from some of our local food mavens and to contribute their own ideas to the mix.

The Permaculture Design Course

TSC is co-sponsoring the upcoming Permaculture Design Course, to be offered in Santa Cruz from February to July, 2009. The ideas of Permaculture underlie much of the philosophy of the Transition movement.

This course will be taught by Larry Santoyo of EarthFlow Design Works, and our own Ken Foster of TSC and Terra Nova Landscaping. From the course website:

Join us on the second weekends of February through July 2009 for a program that past students have called "life-changing" and "a source of inspiration." This training includes the most inspiring examples of sustainable land use and human ingenuity from around the world. The Permaculture Design Course has truly transformed the lives and enhanced the careers of thousands of people around the world, including architects, landscapers, community developers, social workers, city planners, teachers, students, farmers, gardeners, homeowners, business owners and others. For anyone serious about creating a sustainable future!

You can attend just one weekend of this 6-month course, or the entire thing. For more information and to register, go to the course website at EarthFlow.com.

TSC members attend Transition Training

T4T ListenersT4T Listeners

Four members of the TSC core group attended "Training for Transition," one of the first trainings offered in the US by two of the originators of the Transition movement from Totnes, England. Transition veterans (in this movement, veterans means since 2005) Sophy and Naresh ran a world-class training on December 6 and 7 at Fort Mason in San Francisco.

The training included techniques for teaching about climate change and peak oil, ample chances to share ideas and network with participants from California, Washington, Idaho, and Colorado, an in-depth look at the psychology of change (Sophy's specialty is the Inner Work of Transition), a brief experience with the Open Space approach to community meetings, and some of Joanna Macy's Work That Reconnects (an approach to healing from alienation and moving from despair about the future to empowerment).

All of us who attended the training feel fired up, reassured that we are on the right track, and well-armed with fresh ideas, connections and materials that will help us move forward. Viva la transition!

A great brainstorm

These were the responses to the “Post-Its” exercise after the film showing of “The Power of Community ” on 10-23-08. People were asked to answer three questions about promoting Transition, on three Post-Its, and post them on three posters on the wall.
