We are looking for 6 interns for a 6 month commitment for the 2009 growing season to work in the following 3 major areas of focus: animal husbandry, vegetable production and educational and fundraising. Each intern will be expected to help with maintenance of the farm while working closely with other interns. Internships begin April 15th, 2009 and end October 15th, 2009 and preference will be given to those that can make a full commitment for the 6 month time period. Shumei Santa Cruz Farm Intern Program

The Shumei Santa Cruz Farm was started in the summer of 2004 as a 22-acre Natural Agriculture farm, situated in the midst of beautiful California redwoods. The farm practices and promotes fertilizer-free, pesticide-free, Natural Agriculture farming, provides consumer education through a consumer supported agriculture (CSA) program, farmers' markets and an annual Open Farm Celebration and provides educational programs for next generations through a Farm to School program. Natural Agriculture is an approach to agriculture in which the natural capacity and wisdom of nature are respected. It is more than a system of food production that eschews the use of all chemicals, fertilizers and pesticides – anything that is unnatural. Natural Agriculture uses no animal or vegetable compost and seed-saving is of paramount importance. It is a way of life. Apprenticeship for 2009 Season, Soil Born Farms Urban Agriculture Education Project, Sacramento, CA

The goal of the apprenticeship program at SBFUAP is to provide a training ground for aspiring urban farmers and gardeners by teaching the basic concepts and practical applications of organic food production, and to use agriculture as a platform to show how alternative food systems tie into the larger social issues of food security, social justice and public health.
