Philosophy

This project is designed to provide:

  • An organized and user friendly format for accessing UC fact sheets and other UC publications relating to fruits and nuts grown in the backyard.
  • Information for backyard gardeners and consumers about UC research, contacts, courses, publications, news, and events related to backyard and consumer fruit and nut crop issues.
  • Worthwhile links to organizations and industries which complement UC to provide a complete resource for backyard gardeners.

Project Considerations

A Cross County Advisory Group

This project will be steered by the PI and their collaborators. The Consumer Horticulture Workgroup will also be consulted, since this group involves Master Gardener advisors and best understands the needs of home gardeners. Additionally a listserv group can be set up among interested personnel for on-going suggestions and input.

Collection of Information

All relevant counties will be notified of this project and will be encouraged to participate. Participating involves sending relevant fact sheets and information electronically, if possible, to the UC Fruit and Nut Research and Information Center/Donna Seaver at fruitsandnuts@ucdavis.edu. It is understood that some older yet still relevant information is only available on hard copy and this can be scanned. This project is set up for minimal work at the county level.

Creation of Templates for County Fact Sheets and Information

Uniformity is important in fact sheets and information so clientele can easily recognize this California collaborative web site. However, it is also important for each county to get recognition for its information for marketing the UCCE office and for recognition of information relevancy to a particular climate. The county name of the information source will be present on the top of each page where appropriate.

Website Statistics

FlashStats software has been used to generate statistics since March 2002, and WebTrends software was used prior to that date. The counts show “http requests” and/or “page views,” excluding all requests from the central UCD campus, including our computer support and files with the extension gif, jpg, jpeg, and png.
