As we head into the 2007 growing season, I want to introduce myself, share my vision for Future Harvest-CASA, and tell you some things we are doing as an organization that really excites me.

My name is Jack Gurley.  My wife, Beckie, and I own and operate Calvert’s Gift Farm in Sparks, Maryland.  I am active in farm issues in Maryland.  I have been on the board of Future Harvest for six years and am past president of the Maryland Organic Food and Farming Association.  I serve on the board of the Maryland’s Agro-Ecology Center, and I am a member of Farm Bureau.  Beckie serves on the Maryland Organic Certification Advisory Committee as well as the board of directors of several farmers market organizations.

Future Harvest-CASA offers the best opportunity for small, less traditionally served agricultural producers to network, express issues of concern, and obtain information vital to their operations.  I know of no other source that contains information on topics as varied as pastured-based meats to small farm energy.  For those of you who have never attended our annual conference, I would suggest you look at highlights from our 2007 gathering to understand the diversity of agriculture we cover.

I think it can be said best that there is big agriculture – and then there is everyone else.  Future Harvest-CASA is everyone else.

Future Harvest is planning some big events in 2007, chief among them a celebration of local food fund-raising dinner on May 31 at Boordy Vineyards. We’ll  feature Boordy’s fine wine and all locally produced products cooked and prepared by well-known Baltimore chefs. We will also host a number of field days and workshops throughout the year.  I hope everyone can attend at least one.  Keep your eye on our calendar for announcements.

Finally, if you have suggestions or ideas about how Future Harvest can serve the “rest of the agricultural industry” please feel free to contact us.
