We have a Fuju Persimmon in our yard, we live in Lake Elsinore, Ca. On a No/East facing hill (totally 2600 ft high) we are up about 1500 ft. from the lake.

We have our tree protected from the winds but last year it didnt bloom. It bloomed the year prior (1st year after planting) I am thinking that we have it in too shaddy a place, shadded by a large peach from the western blazing sun in the aternoon, it gets total sun until 1pm and then doppled afternoon sun. Should we/can we move this tree if necessary now? We picked this place due to extreme winds.

Im in Orinda, (Contra Costa Co) California. I have 3 (6 in 1) espaliered apple and 3 (6 in 1) espaliered pear trees that were planted in March 08 along a deer fence facing SE ( 2/3of the day with full sun). They had limited spring blossoms but actually produced a solitary apple (Gala). I havent done anything to them (they even still have their horizonal stakes attached). Im looking for pruning and maintaining info. Thanks.

Orange co. calif 3 miles from Beach. I have a single dwarf Satsuma that receives full sun. The tree is est 8 years old and has a large amount of fruit maturing on the main tree., About 3-4 years ago to two suckers advanced from about 1" above the soil and I have allowed them to harden and mature. The suckers are about 1.5 in daimeter and very vigorous. It does not appear that they have set any flowers. Question Is a dwarf Satsuma grafted? And if the suckers are below the graft will they produce fruit? If the original root system below the graft is a normal size Satsuma will the suckers overtake the tree? SHould they be removed? Thanks, ARt

I have found your site to be extrememly helpful. We are planting the first part of our home orchard (40 trees of plums, apples, cherries, peaches, nectarines, and apricots). I have used both your site and the Dave Wilson site which I found as a link from yours. It has helped me select and plan for many hopefully tastey varieties. We made a very quick decision to buy and plant trees this year and could not have done such an exciting job without your website and links. (I was working from an old Sunset Book with good info but none of the new exciting varieties) The trees are planted and we are now to the point of pruning the new trees. I am having some trouble sorting this out. Some of the trees are more mature than others. I have the references and books but some give varying information. I have called in a nursery consultant to help us with this stage so we are off to a good start. Thanks as I will continue to use the sight and hopefully take the Master Gardener class in the future!

Hello, I am a senior in Cal Poly San Luis Obispos Wine & Viticulture program. i am currently working on a project to design a virtual vineyard in an up and coming AVA. I have chosen the Malibu-Newton Canyon AVA but am having difficulty locating climate and soil information in the region which would aid me in recommending the varietals to plant; as well as the trellis, irrigation, and frost protection sytems to install. Could you possibly point me to where I might find climate info for the region, including but not limited to: Growing Degree Days, frost occurance, mean/high/low temperatures, amount of precipitation, etc.? I am also looking for information about the soil series in the region. Any help would be of great value and very much appreciated. Thank you very much. Cheers.

I have been helping my father care for his land of nearly three acres near Escondido, Calif. I can see that as time goes on I will need to be making more of the decisions concerning his avocado, lemon, orange, grapefruit, fig, lychee, pomegranate, and persimmon trees. Practices of the previous owner resulted in avocado root rot in most of the propertys soil.

We are anticipating about a 1/3 cutback in water use in 2008. I would appreciate advice on criteria for determining which trees to save and which to cut down. Few of the avocado trees have any fruit on them after the wind storm that accompanied the recent firestorm. There was no fire damage on this property. I also need information &/or sources for information concerning avocado root rot, resistant avocado varieties, and irrigation techniques. I suspect that the various kinds of trees have different water needs, but all are pretty much on the same system and schedule.

Thank you, --DB

I am trying to grow low chill apples, pears, peaches, nectrines, perimmons, walnuts etc in a place in south India where the winter temperatures range from 5 to 10 degrees celsius at night for three months in winter. Can some one help me with regard to selection of plant varieties? The information that you have made available to the public is very useful.

Special thanks to you for volunteering as a master gardener. As you can see from these replies, I'm always referring people to their local master gardeners - you are also a valuable resource. I have a 2-Yr old Satsuma plum, 10 ft. high, and full of blossoms. (3-7-07). This week, I bought a Santa Rosa, and placed it in a big tub, and under the Satsuma to serve as a pollen source.

I worry about the problem of lack of Bees. Any advice about either being pollenized?

I am in the process of planting a cherry tree and a columnar apple tree. Does anyone have a Montmorecy cherry tree? Any particulars? Do I need two columnar apple trees for pollination? I do have one each Fuji and Braeburn espelier trees. Will these trees be able to pollinate the Scarlet Sentinal Columnar apple? Thanks, Barbara
