Attention Emergency Responders: How To Determine If Your SCBA Respirator
Is Certified By NIOSH For CBRN Environments...
Check The Label
The National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) is
testing and certifying self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) for use
by emergency responders in chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear
(CBRN) environments.
Only a limited number of models have been certified to date. The devices
certified to date are certain versions of some models manufactured by
Mine Safety Appliances Company (MSA); Interspiro,
USA; Scott Health and Safety; Draeger
Safety Inc.; International Safety Instruments,
Inc.; and Survivair.
To determine if a given SCBA has been tested and certified by NIOSH for
use by emergency responders for use in CBRN environments:
- Look to see if the CBRN Agent Approval label shown below is on the
respirator. If an SCBA is CBRN-approved by NIOSH, it will always carry
this label. If this CBRN Agent Approval label is not
on the SCBA, the device is not approved by NIOSH for
use by emergency responders in CBRN environments. Check the
Label!
- Additional information is provided through the NIOSH, matrix-style
approval labels found in the “Instruction Manual” for the
respirator. The “Instruction Manual” was shipped by the
manufacturer with the respirator.
- The approval number for an SCBA approved for CBRN environments
always includes a CBRN suffix (TC-13F-XXXXCBRN).
If the approval number does not include a CBRN
suffix, it is not certified by NIOSH for use by
emergency responders in CBRN environments.
- The complete CBRN SCBA assembly must be composed of only
those component parts listed in the row with the CBRN approval number.
Part numbers that are found only in the rows of
the non-CBRN approvals must not
be used as part of a CBRN SCBA assembly.
The devices certified by NIOSH for use by emergency responders in CBRN
environments are listed below by manufacturer, NIOSH approval number,
model, pressure rating and rated maximum duration. Additionally, the National
Fire Protection Agency's (NFPA) 1981 consensus standard edition, in effect
at the time of actual NIOSH/NPPTL live agent testing and QNFT, is provided.
NOTE: For each of these models, there is a version that
NIOSH has certified only for traditional use, and a version that NIOSH
has certified for use by emergency responders for CBRN environments. Only
the versions certified for emergency responders for CBRN environments
will have a label indicating “CBRN-Agent Approved”
on the respirator itself and a CBRN suffix in the approval
number shown in the Instruction Manual.

purposes only. This information does not constitute a commercial endorsement
of the products. This information is accurate as of 2/14/05, but additional
models may also be approved at a later date.
