In the summer, Eli Lilly and Company in conjunction with the Entomology Department at Purdue University sponsor the Tippecanoe County Butterfly Count. Volunteers will take a census of all the butterflies sighted within the Eli Lilly Company Wildlife Habitat Area (LWHA) located across from the Tippecanoe Laboratory. These counts are usually held near the beginning or middle of July. The date of Saturday, July 19, 2008 has been set for this next year's count. If it rains on the forementioned date the rain date will be the following day, Sunday, July 22, 2008.

Saturday, July 19, 2008
Identification Training 1:00 pm
Butterfly Count 2:00 - 4:30 pm
Picnic 5:00 pm
(Rain Date: July 20, same times)

There are currently 149 species of butterflies known from Indiana. Of those, 71 have been reported from Tippecanoe County and 41 from the LWHA. The diversity of habitats at the LWHA, including open fields, prairie grass, wildflowers, forested areas, a pond and two springs contribute to the abundance and diversity of butterflies in this well managed 100 acre property.
