Purdue’s Department of Entomology provides opportunity and an environment for advanced study in which students, guided by faculty mentors, prepare for careers as scientists and teachers of the highest quality. Graduate study stresses the development of the individual in their chosen specialty. The goal of our program is to produce graduates with a broad and diverse scientific background and a wide range of experiences useful in the fulfillment of their career objectives. Because of the emphasis on individual programs of study, students have the opportunity to challenge traditions, to discover new knowledge, and to become engaged with a variety of scholarly and societal challenges. Students are expected to reflect and surpass, in some measure, the scholarly accomplishments of the faculty mentors with whom they study. This challenge for high achievement creates a dynamic and exciting atmosphere for graduate study.

The Department of Entomology offers programs leading to the degrees of:

• Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.)
• Master of Science (M.S.)
• Peace Corps Master
• Non-Thesis Master of Science (M.S.)

A thesis is required as partial fulfillment for the M.S. and Ph.D. In general, it is the policy of the department to require the M.S. before the Ph.D., and all students having only the baccalaureate degree will initially be registered for the M.S. Exceptions to this policy are made subject to the approval of the student’s Advisory Committee, the departmental Graduate Committee, and the department head.

Timely Completion of Degree:

• Ph.D. (with M.S.) - no more than 4 calendar years
• Ph.D. (w/o M.S.) - no more than 5 calendar years
• M.S. - no more than 3 calendar years
