Why Do an Internship?

Working as an intern or apprentice on an organic farm is one of the best ways to learn about organic farming. It can be a mutually beneficial arrangement for farmer and intern alike. The organizations on this list connect farmers with interns. Send a SASE or call well in advance of the growing season to receive information.

Farmers and interns often have different ideas about the amount of work required, time spent on education and training, and issues like housing and compensation. Coming to an agreement at the beginning of the internship can avoid many problems further down the road. Several organizations have written guidelines for farmer/internship agreements, including many listed below.

Additionally, see our opportunities available for working with sustainable agriculture organizations.

We "employ" 10 working shareholders (80 hours for 1 share in the CSA) who work part of one morning per week from mid-April through October. Starting date is April 15 and ending date is October 31. We also employ 3-4 full-time paid staff from March to December. All of the above positions are filled for 2009. Additionally, we welcome anyone who wants to come work and talk and learn about our farming practices. Call ahead and set up a time to spend some time in the field with us.

Responsibilities include some animal care, some haymaking, and mostly vegetable and fruit planting, weeding, mulching, and picking. csa@naturalroots.com

In 2008 Natural Roots begins its eleventh season here at the farm in Conway. We are a diversified small family farm. At present we have about 7 acres under cultivation in mixed vegetables, berries, and herbs, or green manure and forage crops. Our produce is marketed exclusively through our CSA of about 185 families, with surplus donated to local people in need. We raise a flock of sheep which yields meat, sheepskins, and spinning fleeces which are processed into dyed and natural colored yarn. We also keep a small flock chickens for egg production and for meat for the farm crew. Our four workhorses are the only source of power for all of the field and woods work. Workdays are very full and rewarding – 5 and 1/2 days per week. Basic workhorse care, handling, driving, and fieldwork are a major component of the apprenticeship. Daily animal chores, pasture fence moving, and animal herding on a regular basis. Crop cultural tasks including seeding, weeding, trellising, mulching, harvesting, and washing happen continuously throughout the season. Staffing our CSA distributions involves assisting customers, stocking produce, and conducting retail sales in our shop. Hay and straw making seasonally. Equipment repair and maintenance are important regular responsibilities. Management of our wood-heated greenhouse, soil fertility, extensive cover cropping, weed control, field rotations, and livestock health are important aspects of the apprenticeship as well. Simple farm construction, and innovative projects abound; food preservation, holistic farm management, and starting a farm business / lifestyle are integral parts of the experience. In addition to education on the farm, we encourage participation in the CRAFT program. This is a network of area farms which all have apprentices and offer extended learning opportunities through a schedule of rotating on-farm tours and seminars on specific topics.

Three apprentices are sought from March to December. Accommodations include two small rustic cabins. All farm-raised produce plus staples are provided in addition to a stipend of $600 per month, plus bonus. Worker’s Compensation is also provided as well as many locally available basic health services free to farm workers.

The farm is situated in the beautiful Eastern foothills of the Berkshire Mountains on the edge of the Pioneer valley. There are limitless outdoor recreational opportunities right out the backdoor (literally) as well as a wealth of cultural resources within thirty minutes drive.

Please respond to our application questions and send with your resume, and three references. After receiving your application we may contact you to set up a farm visit.

We are a 30 acre diverse small farm on the Sippican River in coastal Marion, MA. Marion is a beach community, with swimming at beaches or in our river. Our woods are full of trails for walking and Marion has lots of open space for hikes.

We have a large market garden growing veggies, small fruits, cut flowers. Produce is sold through a 50 member CSA. PMF is also a florist, specializing in wedding & party flowers, both farm-grown & brought in. We are also the home of "farm vacations for good dogs", no-cage boarding in our farmhouse and spacious play yard, for both day care & long term stays.

Our season extends from first CSA pickups in June, through the last ones in early October . We have interns arrive from mid-April (preferred) till mid-May & leave from Labor Day till Oct. 1 (preferred). We usually have 2 interns. We provide room and board. We encourage weekend travel; if you hang around, you work!

Duties include weeding, mulching, planting, pruning, raised-bed building, picking, washing and bagging, playing with dogs, etc. We are a no-till farm & so there is lots of wheelbarrow work & hand work. Interns must be able to work alone, with instruction. We try to be a "learner-farm", so that when they leave, interns could do our work on their own. We require keeping a daily journal, so that interns have a guide to do it again.

The ideal intern for us is someone who likes some instruction, doesn't resent hard work and has the ability to ask when they don't know something. We have LOTS of laughs and are happy to report that at least one of our former interns is now running her own farm!

Picadilly Farm is a family farm, begun and run by Jenny and Bruce Wooster in 2006. We're located on 71 acres of rural farmland in southwest New Hampshire, with 40 tillable acres of fine sandy loam. The farm is in the Connecticut River valley, just over the state line from MA, 20 minutes from Brattleboro VT, and half an hour from both Greenfield MA and Keene NH.

Apprentices are involved in many aspects of running our farm. Apprentices work in the greenhouse and learn about its operation. Apprentices assist in all of the fieldwork, including planting, weeding, hoeing, harvesting and irrigation tasks. Apprentices typically become skilled in the use and maintenance of one of the farm tractors, and are taught about the use of much of the other farm equipment. Over time, apprentices take increasing responsibility for managing the harvests, plus post-harvest handling, and CSA distribution at the farm. Apprentices also have ample opportunities to participate in record-keeping and planning. In the spring, we compile a packet for each apprentice, with much of the information about our farm (budget, business plan, marketing plans, crop plans, etc) included.

The apprentice schedule runs from April 1 through the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. An extended apprenticeship into the winter is also possible. The work week is 5 days (either M-F or TU-SAT), with work from 6am to 5pm. We offer a monthly stipend of $900, a private room in a shared farm crew house ¾ mile from the farm, and produce from the farm. Apprentices have twice-monthly opportunities to participate in educational events off the farm. We appreciate apprentices with a flexible attitude, with an endurance for labor that includes lifting and moving 50 pounds, and with their own car for travel off the farm. Some Spanish language skills are a plus, but not required.

In 2009, we'll work with 3-4 field workers (mostly Spanish-speaking) and 2 apprentices. We sell our produce through our on-farm and delivered CSA shares, to a buying co-operative of 350 households, and to several other regional CSA's. We'll grow 25-30 acres of produce, and raise 6 or so pigs. We're considering additional animals for 2009, probably meat chickens. Our fields are eligible for organic certification in June, so we'll be applying this spring. The coming season will be our third in production on this farm - we are still involved in many start-up and infrastructure projects.

For more information, please contact us at the farm. To apply for an apprenticeship, please send along a resume, references, and a letter telling us what you're looking for in an apprenticeship. We like to meet prospective apprentices for a visit at the farm.

Sidehill Farm is a small-scale dairy and vegetable farm in the foothills of the Berkshire mountains. Our mission is to produce the healthiest, best-tasting raw milk, yogurt, fruit, and vegetables available by focusing on a total picture of health - of our customers, our cows, our crops, the local working rural landscape, and the robust biological and human community within which we all thrive.

Our dairy is seasonal, milking approximately 15 cows from March until Thanksgiving. The cows are rotationally grazed during the pasture season, and eat hay and haylage through the winter. We also have 3 acres in vegetables and herbs, and two large greenhouses for tomatoes, basil, vegetable seedlings, and winter salad greens. Raw milk is sold at the farm, vegetables are sold at farmers markets and a weekly farm pickup, and yogurt is sold at all three, plus wholesale to local retailers.

Sidehill Farm is looking to fill three positions for the 2009: one assistant manager apprentice for vegetable crops; one assistant manager apprentice for the dairy, and one field apprentice with shared responsibility for dairy and vegetables. Assistant manager apprentices will have some responsibility for both dairy and vegetables.

The Assistant Manager apprenticeships are positions for people who have 1-2 years of experience, and feel that they want to take on more responsibility than a field internship. They will work closely with Amy and Paul, but should also be able to work effectively alone, and direct other people. The vegetable apprentice will be primarily responsible for greenhouse work, transplanting, seeding, cultivation, harvesting, cover cropping, compost making, and washing and packing orders. Additionally, there will be some farmer's market responsibilities and a share of animal chores. The dairy apprentice will be primarily responsible for milking, herd health, fence moving, pasture clipping, and barn chores. Approximately 20% of their workweek will also be on the vegetable farm, with possible farmers market time. The positions run from March or April through November. Stipend is $600/month, plus housing, one group meal per day, milk, yogurt, and veggies from the farm.

The field apprentice will split their time between the vegetables and the dairy. Responsibilites will include helping with the tasks described above, as well as independent milking shifts. The position runs from March or April through October or November. Stipend for the field apprentice is $400 per month, plus housing, one group meal per day, milk, yogurt, and veggies from the farm.

All applicants should be good with their hands, able to lift 50 lbs, willing to work in all weather, have lots of common sense, and have a good sense of humor. (Cheesy or dry - we have some of each here.) Workdays are busy but fun, and we love to share the constant learning process of farming. Swimming, hiking, biking are right out the door, and lots of cultural opportunites are within a 20 minute drive.

Accomodation is in private camping trailers with hot running water and cooking facilities, or a rustic cabin. The workweek is 50-60 hours, Monday morning through Saturday lunchtime. Sat evening and Sunday animal chores are on a loose rotation.

Simple Gifts Farm

22 Poole Rd, Belchertown, MA 01007
Amherst, MA 01007

Simple Gifts Farm is a small, diverse market farm located in Western Massachusetts. We moved our operation to a new site in 2006, and expanded production from about 5 acres in 2005 to about 10 in 2006, and 12 in 2007-8. In 2009, we will be growing 12-15 acres of crops. The new farm site is owned by North Amherst Community Farm, Inc., an organization that formed in 2005 to save the site from development. 2006 was the first year of our 150-share CSA. We also sell at the Amherst, MA farmer's market, and sell heirloom tomatoes to our local Whole Foods Market.

Simple Gifts Farm has in the past specialized in heirloom tomatoes, garlic, and salad mix. Starting in 2004, we have been diversifying into broccoli, root crops, and other extensively-grown crops. With the new CSA, we have diversified further to supply members with a full range of produce. The farm has also added livestock into the mix, and practices mixed-species rotational grazing on our rotation land. The livestock operation expanded in 2008 to include a 200-hen laying flock. We also have season-extension hoophouses and a greenhouse heated by used vegetable oil that is used to produce early crops for farmer's markets and some greens for sale during the winter.

We are seeking three interns to work from April 1st to November 15th. There may be work extending into late November or even December for one or more of the interns. The work week will consist of approximately 50 hours, with 9-hour days on weekdays, and rotating Saturday market days and weekend chore duties. We start work as early as 6 A.M., especially during the heat of summer, and have more free time in the afternoon. Work outside of normal work hours will be required for some projects. For example, the apprentices will be responsible on a rotating basis for greenhouse and livestock chores, including weekends. There will also be some evening times when interns will mind the CSA distribution or the farm stand.

The work is often very tedious, and we spend long hours in hot sun and cold rain. However, the rewards of seeing the very tangible and delicious fruits of your labors are great (at least we think so).

The apprentices will be housed at the site, in a historic farmhouse. The farm site is in Amherst, within walking distance to conservation land, a swimming hole, restaurants, other businesses. Downtown Amherst is an easy bike or bus ride away and hosts a plethora of cultural activities. Apprentices will be responsible for whatever food they need in addition to the bounty of vegetables produced at the farm.

A stipend of $600/ month will be paid to the apprentices. Basic health insurance and worker's compensation will be provided. > Apprentices will have some structured and many unstructured opportunities to learn. The fact that we are a small and relatively young operation means that apprentices remain very close to the decision-making process, and will be assigned independent work assignments as they demonstrate ability to complete them well. Apprentices will find that they will gain the most if they show initiative, attention to detail, and a good work ethic. Being small also means that we all end up doing everything; so apprentices will be exposed to a diverse array of activities. The move and ongoing expansion provides both a challenge for all of us and an opportunity for apprentices to learn. Since the farmers will be learning as they go, much of the thought processes behind the way the farm is set up will be more transparent. Tractor work will be one of the apprentice's responsibilities. We are associate members of the CRAFT program, which brings apprentices to nearby farms for farm visits on a biweekly basis.

Positions will be filled on a rolling basis. Please send a resume and a list of at least three work references. We will contact candidates by phone to arrange an interview. Farm visits are strongly recommended, though phone interviews can work for those living further away.
