Guide to Conservation Programs

Simplified Guide to Conservation Programs of the 2002 Farm Bill Conservation Practices and Programs for Your Farm is an attractive, 8-page color foldout that ties conservation practices to an overview of the farm bill conservation programs. A program matrix outlines eligibility requirements, type of financial assistance, and producer obligations for eight major USDA conservation programs.  For your use:  News Release, News Briefs and Newsletter article.

This excellent overview was produced by the Wildlife Management Institute with technical help from the Natural Resources Conservation Service’s Wildlife Habitat Management Institute. Individual copies available as long as supplies last from local USDA or conservation district offices. Also, order copies by calling 1-888-LANDCARE or from the web at www.nrcs.usda.gov and clicking on publications.

Understanding the Landscape Video Training Rollout

Personnel from 35 states recently traveled to the Lied Center in Lincoln, NE to rollout the newest training course developed by the NRCS Wildlife Team, in conjunction with the NRCS Soil Quality Institute, Colorado State University and Oregon State University. The course was 2 years in the making and Wendell Gilgert and Kathryn Boyer of WHMI led the production. The 12 lectures and 5 case studies will be used to help NRCS field staff better understand the ecological principles that need to be considered when helping landowners with conservation planning.

Land of Life

In October 2002, the NRCS Wildlife Team held the premier of its new video Land of Life that highlights what America’s Farmers and Ranchers are doing to manage fish and wildlife habitat on their working lands. Many folks were at the event where Pete Heard led the showing of the 8 minute video produced by Lynn Betts, Communications Director for WHMI located in Ames IA. In addition to the video, there is a color booklet entitled, Our Living Land, that highlights examples of wonderful projects led by NRCS field personnel and our partners to help landowners get conservation an America’s working lands. One of the more interesting features of the production is the support that it received from both the agricultural commodity organizations and wildlife groups.

Bottomland Hardwood Management/WRP Compatible Use Workshop

The U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) Wildlife Habitat Management Institute and Wetland Science Institute held a workshop addressing the management of bottomland hardwoods for migratory birds. This is of great concern as NRCS addresses the issue of Compatible Use on Wetland Reserve (WRP) lands. Forest management is also a concern for the FWS on refuges in the lower Mississippi valley.

Randy Gray, Leslie Deavers, and Harry Slawter attended along with the members of the workgroup who developed the draft of the Compatible Use Guidelines. The workshop addressed not only managing the forest to provide the correct structure for priority bird species, but also reviewed landscape issues that need to be considered. In addition to the classroom work the participants got to spend much time in the field reviewing bottomland hardwood sites.

In addition to the effort to look at Compatible Use Guidelines for timber harvest, Bill Hohman of WHMI led a similar team that developed draft guidelines for evaluating grazing as a compatible use on grasslands. Training for the grazing guidelines is anticipated to take place in the future. Drafts of both reports have been sent to National headquarters for review, approval and printing.
