Tuberculosis
What is Tuberculosis?
The word tuberculosis (TB) refers to a range of
illnesses caused by the bacteria Mycobacterium
tuberculosis. People can have the inactive (latent)
form of TB (LTB1) or the active form. Those with
latent TB cannot pass on the disease and can be
treated to prevent it from becoming active TB.
People with active TB disease can In some people,
particularly those who have weak immune systems, the
TB bacilli may become active, leading to TB disease,
which can potentially affect almost every organ of
the body, especially the lung.
TB disease can be cured with appropriate
medications (specific antimicrobial drugs).
If not treated properly, TB disease can be fatal.
TB disease was once the leading cause of death in
the United States and it remains a leading cause of
death worldwide.
