USDA Awards Food Stamp Outreach Grants
WASHINGTON, August 28, 2006—Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns today awarded
$1.05 million to 15 faith and community-based organizations to improve both
access to, and awareness of, USDA's Food Stamp Program for eligible low-income
households.
“Ensuring that all eligible low-income Americans have access to nutrition
assistance provided by the Food Stamp Program remains a top priority for us,”
said Johanns. “Community and faith-based organizations are uniquely positioned
to assist and educate members of their community about the program as well as
resources that lead to maintaining a nutritious diet.”
These grants will test food stamp outreach strategies to raise awareness about
the benefits of the Food Stamp Program among eligible low-income people such as
the working poor, legal immigrants and the elderly. The 15 grantees plan to use
a variety of outreach strategies that include information dissemination,
pre-screening, application assistance, community events, education programs and
train-the-trainer programs. Most grantees work with partners, such as other
community or faith-based organizations, senior service programs, food banks or
food pantries, health providers, and housing programs in order to customize the
outreach programs to the needs of the community. The maximum award for each
grant is $75,000.
