Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge

small state map showing location

Wadesboro, North Carolina

The Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge was established in 1965 and is administered by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Department of the Interior. The refuge is located in Anson and Richmond Counties, North Carolina. The Pee Dee National Wildlife Refuge plays a vital role in the protection and perpetuation of waterfowl resources of the interior portion of the Atlantic Flyway.

The Piedmont area of North Carolina once attracted large numbers of Canada geese and ducks. Restoration of the dwindling flock of Canada geese and ducks, providing nesting sanctuary for wood duck, protecting and enhancing red-cockaded woodpecker habitat and providing interpretation and recreational opportunities for the public are the primary refuge objectives. During late fall and winter large numbers of ducks and Canada geese can be seen on the refuge. Unusual numbers of hawks can also be seen.

Refuge headquarters is located six (6) miles north of Wadesboro, North Carolina, on U.S. Highway 52.
