Rock ‘n’ Roll ‘n’ Recycle

Music fans can now protect the planet while grooving to their favorite bands this summer. More concert venues are rocking and rolling out recycling bins than ever to collect the cans, bottles, and other wastes that are discarded in large quantities at each show. By implementing a waste reduction program, music festivals and venues have found that they can reduce their carbon footprint while reducing event costs.

Baseball Hits Home Run on Waste Reduction

Major League Baseball (MLB) is going, going, going green. More than 10 teams have launched green initiatives or plan to soon, whether by starting recycling programs, composting food waste, or building a new stadium using recycled material. MLB baseball games bring together tens of thousands of fans in communities across the country together. However, in the process the stadiums also consume vast amounts of resources and generate significant amounts of waste. Stadium operators have found that by cutting waste wherever possible, they can improve their environmental reputation, reduce their stadium's impact on the environment, and cut costs.


GreenScapes Helps Green the National Mall

EPA's GreenScapes program is making the National Mall in Washington, DC, a little greener through a summertime exhibit at the US Botanic Gardens and by working with the National Park Service to improve the grass on the National Mall. Open from Memorial Weekend through Columbus Day, the GreenScapes exhibit at the US Botanic Garden will showcase environmentally-friendly lawn and garden care practices for homeowners.

Participate in the Lifecycle Building Challenge 2!

The Lifecycle Building Challenge 2 is an exciting national competition to develop strategies supporting building deconstruction and material reuse. Everyone is encouraged to enter including students and professionals interested in policy, recycling, design, architecture, engineering, education, and more. Submit ideas in 2 categories: buildings or innovations (components, policies, educational tools, or ideas) that will reduce waste and advance building material reuse. New in 2008! Challenge partners will present outstanding achievement awards for Best Greenhouse Gas Reduction entry, Best School entry, and Best Residential entry.

Auto Mercury-Recovery Program Hits Milestone

Administrator Stephen Johnson announced on February 29, at an event in Georgia, a major milestone for the National Vehicle Switch Recovery Program (NVMSRP). Since the program was created in August 2006, one million mercury automobile switches have been collected, preventing more than a ton of mercury from being released into the environment.

EPA's Resource Conservation Challenge Update: Managing Materials for a Sustainable Future (PDF) (28 pp, 3.4MB, about PDF) showcases recent efforts and accomplishments in strengthening the nation’s infrastructure to reduce, reuse, and recycle municipal solid waste, industrial materials, and electronics, and to reduce the amount of toxic chemicals released to the environment. These significant RCC accomplishments are possible through our strong partnerships and collaboration with state and tribal partners, industry, nongovernmental organizations, corporations, other federal agencies, local governments, and individual citizens.

Digital Television Transition

TV Converter Box Coupon After February 17, 2009, all full-power television stations will broadcast only in digital. You will not be affected by the transition, if you own a television with a digital tuner or subscribe to a TV service (e.g., cable or satellite). EPA is encouraging consumers that receive over the air broadcasts on analog TV sets to extend the life of their TV by purchasing a digital converter box. For consumers that choose to buy a new digital TV, EPA recommends energy efficient sets with the ENERGY STAR label.
