Natural Heritage Data Explorer is a new website application that features powerful GIS capabilities including:
- An interactive map service that allows the user to display a variety of data layers, including county boundaries, roads, streams, watershed boundaries, conservation lands, and topographic and aerial photography for the entire state.
- Ability to change the scale and location of map displays.
- Ability to select and identify specific features such as rare species, conservation sites, and karst resources.
- Ability to create boundaries and labels for specific locations and print maps.
- Ability to identify the presence of natural heritage resources within a two-mile project buffer.
- Ability to submit project boundaries to DCR through the website and receive a detailed report
Access to the Natural Heritage Data Explorer Website is
available by subscription only. All users of this website are required to be either registered subscribers to this website, or authorized representatives of registered subscribers to this website. Individuals cannot subscribe directly to this website, subscription is available only to
organizations (agencies, companies, and non-profits).
As a condition of registration, all subscribers are required to sign a form guaranteeing their adherence, and the adherence of all persons whom they shall authorize to use this website, to these Terms and Conditions. All users of this website, whether direct subscribers or authorized representatives of subscribers, are required to adhere to these Terms and Conditions.

To apply for a subscription to the Natural
Heritage Data Explorer Website, a representative of the requesting organization
should contact the DCR-NH Data Explorer Subscriptions Administrator
(nhderegister@dcr.virginia.gov)
by email with the following information:

organization
·Name of organization representative who will arrange the subscription
·Contact information for organization representative – email address, phone numbers, physical mailing address
We will be in touch within 5 business days to discuss
·Appropriate level of access for organization’s mission
·Subscription fees, if applicable
·License agreement and/or Memorandum of Agreement
·Anticipated number of users within organization
·Training needs
·Additional organizational contacts, if necessary
