Conservation 2000 is a six-year, $100 million initiative designed to take a broad-based, long-term ecosystem approach to conserving, restoring, and managing Illinois' natural lands, soils, and water resources while providing additional high-quality opportunities for outdoor recreation. It is an innovative and visionary approach to natural resource conservation promoted by the State of Illinois.

Illinois' 3,000 inland lakes and 84,000 ponds will greatly benefit from the passage of Conservation 2000, as one of its major components is the funding of a six-year, $7.0 million program through the Illinois EPA for implementation of the recommendations contained in a report called the Illinois Lake Management Program Act - Administrative Framework Plan.

Please read the overview for a more detailed introduction to this program, commonly referred to as the Illinois Clean Lakes Program. The balance of Conservation 2000 funds are being directed to fund new and expanded programs through the Illinois Department of Natural Resources and the Illinois Department of Agriculture. Educational and non-profit organizations should read about our Lake Education Assistance Program, which provides financial assistance for inland lake/lake watershed educational activities.

This page is updated on a monthly basis.

NOTE: Funding provided to Illinois EPA to carry out the inland lake management program activities described above is made available through the State of Illinois' Conservation 2000 Program (Public Act 89-49) signed into law on June 29, 1995. For further information regarding any of the activities mentioned above, contact Illinois EPA's Lakes Program at 217/782-3362.
