DTIC Online Quick Navigation Guide

Overview of DTIC Online

DTIC.mil, Public STINET (Scientific and Technical Network), and DTIC Search have been consolidated into DTIC Online (Public), creating a single point of entry to DTIC and its products and services.

This new integrated public Web site offers single-site access to information previously available on three separate sites.

3. Public STINET - http://stinet.dtic.mil/

In this transition, the products and services you are accustomed to accessing may now be available in a different location. The following list will assist you with locating the most common resources accessed through DTIC.

DTIC A to Z

Description: DTIC A to Z is an alphabetical listing of topics for easier access to information. If a resource cannot be located by navigating the site, the DTIC A to Z listing is another way to find information.

Where to find it: This service can be located using the "DTIC A to Z" link on the main navigation bar.

Simple Search


Description: The simple search includes options to search the DTIC S&T database, DoD Web sites, Federal S&T or the DTIC Web site.

Where to find it: A simple search can be performed on any DTIC Web page from the search field on the main menu bar located near the top of the page.

Advanced Search

Description: The advanced search allows users to refine their search by record, title and author, as well as select search display options and search categories.

Where to find it: The advanced search can be accessed from any DTIC Web page with the "Advanced Search" link on the main menu bar located near the top of the page.

Searching DTIC Technical Reports

Description: The same search tools that were available in Public STINET are still available in DTIC Online. The search tools include the Quick, Guided, and Advanced Search for DTIC Technical Reports.

Where to find it: To access these search tools:
1. Click on the "Advanced Search" link on the main menu bar located near the top of the page.
2. Click on Public Technical Reports in the Search Categories list.
3. Select "Simple-Advanced Searches" in the right navigation menu.

Corporate Source

Description: The Corporate Source database is a collection of Corporate Authors. Corporate Authors are the organizations and agencies responsible for reports received by DTIC.

Where to find it:
1. Click on the "Advanced Search" link on the main menu bar located near the top of the page.
2. Click on "Public Technical Reports" in the Search Categories list.
3. Select "DTIC Collection Searches" in the right navigation menu.

The Corporate Source can also be located using the "DTIC A to Z" page.

DTIC Thesaurus

Description: An alphabetical listing of subject headings (descriptors) to index and catalog technical documents in the DTIC collections for the purpose of reference and retrieval.

Where to find it:
1. Click on the "Advanced Search" link on the main menu bar located near the top of the page.
2. Click on "Public Technical Reports" in the Search Categories list.
3. Select "DTIC Collection Searches" in the right navigation menu.

The thesaurus can also be located using the "DTIC A to Z" page.

Journals

Description: DTIC hosts Journals/Conferences/E-Book Collections that are accessed through the site.

Where to find it: These are now available in the S&T Resources section of the site.

Research and Development Descriptive Summaries (RDDS)

Description: Furnishes narrative information on Research, Development, Test and Evaluation (RDT&E) programs and Program Elements (PE Numbers) within the Department of Defense.

Where to find it:
1. Click on the "S&T Resources" link on the main menu bar located near the top of the page.
2. Select "Resource Descriptions" in the right navigation menu.
3. Select "DoD Resources" from the right navigation menu.

The RDDS can also be located using the "DTIC A to Z" page.

Handle Service

Description: DTIC's Handle Service assigns persistent identifiers called "handles" to electronic resources, and stores them in its Handle Service.

Where to find it: More information about this service can be located under the "S&T Resources" link on the main navigation bar and then under "DTIC Search Tools."

Ask a Librarian

Description: This digital, collaborative reference service is available 10 hours per day, 7 days per week.

Where to find it: This service can be located under the "Find It" link on the main navigation bar or on the "DTIC A to Z" page.

Registration

Description: DTIC's Registration assists customers with registration eligibility requirements, problems with accessing DTIC Web services, and upgrading the level of access needed to view required information.

Where to find it: This service can be located using the "Registration" link on the main navigation bar.

Submitting Documents to DTIC

Description: DTIC facilitates information exchange throughout the Defense establishment and encourages everyone in the Defense community to participate in the program by submitting all appropriate materials for inclusion in our databases.

Where to find it: This service can be located using the "Submit Documents" link on the main navigation bar.

Ordering Documents

Description: This service allows DTIC registered users to obtain a document.

Where to find it: This service can be located using the "Find It" link on the main navigation bar and then selecting "How Do I…?" Next, select the "Obtain a Document" link.

Information Analysis Centers (IACs)

Description: IACs are research and analysis organizations established by the DoD to support researchers, scientists, engineers, and program managers with expertise in all areas of Defense research and engineering.

Where to find it: This area can be located using the "IACs" link on the main navigation bar.

Militarily Critical Technologies List (MCTL)

Description: MCTL is a collection of existing goods and technologies that the DoD assesses would permit significant advances in the development, production, and use of military capabilities of potential adversaries.

Where to find it:
1. Click on the "S&T Resources" link on the main menu bar located near the top of the page.
2. Select "Resource Descriptions" in the right navigation menu.
3. Select "DoD Resources" from the right navigation menu.

The MCTL can also be located using the "DTIC A to Z" page.

Interest Areas

Description: The Interest Areas of the Web site provide access to a very broad range of links to information on contacts, associations, blogs, conferences and research institutions appropriate to Science & Technology research communities.

Where to find it: This area can be located using the "Interest Areas" link on the main navigation bar.

Training

Description: DTIC provides free training to registered DTIC users at its headquarters and regional offices. Additionally, customized and on-site courses can be provided.

Reference


Description: The DTIC Reference Team provides extensive information on topics related to Department of Defense science and technology research, referring you to the right information source.
